Based. Litrpgs are the future
Making History - K.J. Parker (2025)
Twelve scholars are called upon by their new king who slaughtered the previous ruling class to create a pretext to invade a neighboring country. He wants them to create previously a unknown ancient civilization that will serve as justification to have his countrymen die for his ambition. The king means this literally, as in building it in the world, not just as a fictional work. If they fail to do so, they will all be put to death.
What follows is a novella length exercise in worldbuilding, or in this case, city building. Everything has to be perfect, so they have to think of everything. A linguist creates a language for them, a historian writes their history, and the other scholars fabricate every other aspect of their society. A static, singular time, isn't enough though, so they have to develop it from its beginning to its end. No question is too trivial and no detail can be overlooked. Some of the scholars enjoy creating the fictional civilization so much that they temporarily forget their original goal, deadline, and punishment.
I've tried reading Parker a lot, but I've never been able to finish any of his novels and I didn't like the short fiction I read, until now. I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected. Making History is amusing, informative, and fun.

I'm glad to see this subgenre start getting some legitimacy even if it isn't for me. People here love to shit on litrpg but it's been very effective at getting young men to read fantasy again and for many it will be a stepping stone into traditional fantasy.
The real cringe is going to be when hollywood starts trying to do live action adaptations of litrpg and we have to see stat screens on tv

I enjoyed this one too, though less than his Engineer trilogy (which is his best prose and plotting) or Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City (which is one of my favorite recentish novels).
It was downright decent of him to only price it at $5 for a novella, rather than the $16 fucking Martha Wells wants for each new Murderbot.

You're right in general but SSF is traditionally male nerds, the kind that over time were getting pulled away by things like vidya anyway. It's more like a recovery of the original audience than bringing in a new one.
Gatekeeping by age is dumb. Imagine if they had started doing that with SFF in the 60s.

I just finished my first Guy Gavriel Kay novel (Tigana).
I liked it, obviously. I think Gavin got pegged at one point by a horny milf but it was left upt to interpretation what she actually did to him. On a more serious note, I really enjoyed how Brandin was humanized rather than just making him le evil wizard man despite his actions obviously giving just cause to the heroes to go against him.
The Night Walkers were just a tiny segment in the story but I felt like they left the strongest impact on me, other than the ring dive at the end.

I liked it. Definitely felt like a middle-of-series book, but the AI was an interesting addition, and it introduced the "series big bad" so to speak. Hard to say nothing happened, given the latter is likely to be the driving factor behind the rest of the series.
The author is one of the rare winners of self publishing and I applaud him for it. The books are pure millennialcore without going woke. Chode (semi-hard) sci-fi is fairly rarely well done and this one fits the bill, with a relatable narrative voice.

I didn't particularly enjoy Prince of Nothing but didn't dislike them, they were worth the time I spent reading them and not much more. Judging Eye is one of my top five SFF books ever and White Luck Warrior is a favorite as well. Great Ordeal was dismal and I wish I'd never opened Unholy Consort. I'm kind of dreading No-God actually coming out, right now it's in a sort of superposition where it's the among the best and worst books that will ever be written, and I'd rather it stay that way than have it settle on worst when the wave function collapses.

I'm looking for book recommendations with a specific vibe that I like to call "Occult Sci-fi". I can't really describe it well, but its basically Science Fantasy that leans more into mysticism and the esoteric and less about realism and scientific stuff. Dune kind of fits that vibe but I something more "mystical" if that makes sense, preferably with dark, foreboding undertones.

It is Red Rising, buddy. Also Sun Eater.
I've been reading new Abercrombie, Devils (2025), after not following his latest prose for a while. It's pretty much a great example of literary bloat, I don't know if he gets paid by the word, but it's a 700 pager that feels like it can be crammed in 300.
This based on me being 100 pages deep and witnessing endless back and forth between two character arcs, and thanks to Abercrombie's desire to fill up the page, both are the same person, and so is everyone else. The only difference between them is their physique and sex. But for fuck's sake, Abercrombie can't stop with whimsical, Critical Role tier character dialogue, where everyone has a quip and each exchange is punctuated by dumb fucking question since everyone is being cute and not giving proper information.
>I thought your predecessor would do it, but -
>My... predecessor?
>Yeah, shame what happened to her.
>What... happened?
>Doesn't matter now, Twix, Gruff McBulge interjected. Leave that for when we get the axe.
>The axe?
>No worries, I'm sure you will be able to read the runes correctly and avoid Agatha's fate.
>Agatha?
>Your predecessor, stupid. Jeez, Gruff, where do they find them?
>They?
A caricature, of course, but I shit you not, this is how Abercrombie wrote this book. I don't remember his early work being this shit. Also does not give a fuck about the setting but that's not a big deal for me.

Imagine, ten years later Shallan is a single mom, completely broken after the news of Adolin cheating with Maya. She's working in a brothel, weaving physical illusions for clients.
Kaladin returns and saves her from the pits of depravity. Very Jesus-like.

I usually love Abercrombie's work, but this was his first book that I did not care for. It's like popcorn, easy to consume but never filling. And of course it's going to be his first work that gets made into film, because it's on that medieval fantasy suicide squad kick with pithy retorts on every page that would just work perfectly for a B movie.
I'm happy that he's made it, but I am not the target audience anymore.

...AS FUCK
I DNF'd about 100 pages in. This was my first Abercrombie book. I'll give First Law a try eventually but it definitely soured my opinion of him. I got the book when he was on tour, was invited by a couple of friends who love First Law. He read the first 2 pages of the book at the start of his talk and I realized I was the only person not laughing at the humor (haha the punchline is that we're cussing!) and was suddenly aware that I had probably made a mistake starting with this book.

Too bad you started with Abercrombie's worst book by far. The Devils is what would happen if Rebecca Yarros tried to write The First Law series. Abercrombie has become a caricature of his former self.
You should at least give The First Law series a shot. It's pretty good. The Devils and his attempt at a YA series are both notoriously bad.

what kind of obstacles or complications are you referring to? As far as I know, the only "taboo" that exists within the space is the inclusion of cheating/NTR/etc plot elements, but I'd argue that most men in general just don't like that kind of shit - even outside of the haremlit genre.

Battlestar Galactica was a great show until... halfway through season three? I can't recall exactly when it jumped the shark, it's been a while. Of course now it's been long enough that I'm questioning if it were ever that good in the first place. There wasn't anything else on television quite like it back then.
I can definitely say that Caprica left a lot to be desired.

Paved with Good Intentions, The War For The Rose Throne - Peter McLean (2025)
Paved with Good Intentions is a standalone novel in the same setting as the other four books in the War for the Rose Throne. The events of the story take place after those books and feature some of the same characters, and reference more, and yet there are surprisingly few spoilers for what happens in the main series.
The story starts with Eline murdering her abusive husband and then being offered by the government to work for them instead of being put to death. So begins the story of her rise to power through murdering, whoring, and intrigue.
Eline isn't psychopathic by nature, so she has to create all sorts of rationalizations for what she does, and her PTSD symptoms grow ever worse. For the reader, the most notable symptom is intrusive thoughts which take the form of the same statements repeated regularly throughout the book such as "I killed a man" and "I murdered my husband" and mentions of violent fantasies. It becomes repetitive, and there's surely a better way to express it, but overall it's fine.
As the story progresses, Eline finds herself in situations of ever higher stakes and greater pressure and that takes a toll on her, and everyone else she's involved with. Life comes at her fast, as the narrative steadily moves forward and escalates quickly. She and those with her keep pace, but their development does seem accelerated, which is noted by the characters.
Compared to the other books in the series, there was much less that I had to look past and accept for being what it was. This one was at least as fun though, so it may well be the one I most enjoyed. That being said, this is the sort of story that's best left as a standalone, as having more would only weigh it down. I'd still read more and enjoy it, but it'd be for the best to let this complete story stand on its own.
A reasonable assumption would be that there are sex scenes, since there's whoring. Surprisingly, there aren't any explicit scenes of penetrative sex. There's a lot of sexual talk and a few described sex acts, but nothing more than that. The violence though, that's explicit.
There's a considerable amount of social commentary, though the characters and exposition rarely directly state their views. This is a story where the characters are lying to each other constantly and everything is an act. Everyone is expected to do and know this and those that don't, won't get very far. That's politics for you.
Keeping in line with the previous books, this one is a Hobbesian affair. A war of all against all, where life for many is solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short. None of the characters are concerned with improving the world or helping others, or at least it's not a priority. Their mindset is to do what they can to survive, and if fortunate, to thrive at the expense of others. That's not something I'd want to have as the bulk of my reading, but it's fine at times.

Seconding this.
it's historical fiction set during the 100 years war and follows William Gold on his journey from camp follower to knight, very true to it's historical setting.
I really appreciated how a lot of the story centered around William's struggle to balance his faith as a christian and his position as a member of the soldiering class.
Hey Paul (black sun dude), did your inexplicably-not-considered-self-promotion post on faggit drive any sales? Genuinely curious, since it seems to have had heavy engagement.

That can still be widely interpreted to include a lot of sci-fi, but here's a fantasy novel copypasted synopsis of a book I know about but haven't read.
The Just City is a 2015 fantasy novel by Jo Walton that explores the practical application of Plato's philosophy in a utopian community founded by the goddess Pallas Athene. The story follows a diverse group of people from across time, brought together to raise children as philosopher-kings and create a perfect society on a Mediterranean island, but they must grapple with the challenges of human nature and the inherent flaws in the utopian ideal.

I think as long as they give female characters agency it can be good. The issue is that as a sub-genre the entire conceit is to spend as much time as possible with female characters who lack any agency. Considering there entire point is to spend them with female characters (who lack agency) it just removes all drama and intrigue making them flat, boring and uninteresting. Shout out sexy space babes for actually having someone break up with the mc.
I wish Gene Wolfe was alive so I could murder the pretentious autofellating fucker myself. Some anon mentioned picrelated, and even though I was not a fan after suffering through 3 New Sun books, the premise looked quirky enough. Unfortunately, instead of doing something cool with the premise of recurring amnesia like Planescape: Torment, this is just another BOTN-style slop of academic diarrhea where the characters can't walk 2 steps without stumbling into some cryptic prophecy and everyone talks like a theater kid. God forbid I'm not confused for 2 seconds, Gene. Rest in piss.

>The female lead is introduced by effortlessly killing a young warrior for not immediately recognizing and standing down to her authority.
>Thinks that it's a better death than someone who defies the Sister Queens deserves.
>Approaches two guards openly, both are immediately cowed except for the guy who gives slight push back but doesn't stop her, and he gets called prideful.
>She walks into the feast hall, and everyone goes quiet. Except for the head honcho, who starts bad-mouthing her.
>She ignores everyone while the big chief gets increasingly agitated, going as far as to call her and her queens bitches.
>The only one she gives any attention to is his daughter, whom she waxes poetically over, saying how beautiful she looks in the cotton dress in an internal monologue.
Gonna be honest, at every step of this, I checked out more and more. Ended up skipping halfway through the chapter.

Sanderson wasn’t that popular until he finished the Wheel of Time series after Robert Jordan died. His whole career is an egregious case of stolen valor. His quips are Reddit-tier and his Cosmere is the MCU of literature.

Absolutely kino. I've read the first trilogy (Prince of Nothing) after seeing it shilled in different boards over here, and I loved it. I've felt like I was a teenager again reading LOTR or GOT, couldn't put it down. One of the things that shock me the most is how you start the books thinking (like Kellhus) that the gods aren't real and religion is just a tool of control, but actually the gods ARE real and everybody is going to hell and the rapist alien monsters are actually in the right. Also, both Kellhus and Cnaiur are literally me.

I've read this whole series and another one by Cameron. I like a lot of things about him but I dislike a lot things. He inserts progressive politics obnoxiously. And in this series he occasionally slips into modern-style atheist diatribes that don't feel like the character.

Yes, it's kino. But Bakkermaniac's are in an even worse position than GRRMfags. At least Gurm's publishers speak to him and actually want to publish The Winds of Winter. We are condemned to tricking people into reading an unfinished series in the hope that we can gaslight Bakker's publishers into releasing what will undoubtedly be an unprofitable book. Welcome to The Unholy 4chonsult.

Doomed City by brothers Strugatski, but it's kinda obscure in the west and I don't know if the translation is any good.

>parenthood is treated as a goal
This is a weird way to phrase it, or think of it. Parenthood isn't a goal, it's a process. The goal is successfully raising your children to be healthy adults capable of pursuing their own lives. Being a parent is merely a means to that end, it's not an end in itself. You don't rest easy once you become a parent. The work has just begun.

No, that's why I reread Black Magician trilogy every so often I've probably read it a dozen times in my life. I've read a lot of Karen MIller's other books but none of them really scratch the same itch. She's written a prequel to Black Magician, and wrote a sequel, but the prequel was less interesting because I know how it ends, and the sequel got derailed by a deranged feminist power fantasy.
