I miss college for this aspect. The college I went to, as shitty as it was, had a really nice three-story tall library with giant windows. At night I'd go over after dinner and sit at one of the chairs by a window on the third floor where no one went and read for a little bit. But then again I also got held at knife-point walking down the street there, so tradeoffs I guess.
I like being an adult with my own place and a family, but I miss the lack of responsibility and amount of freetime I had back then.

Libraries are hideous places full of the dregs of society. The selection of books are dreadful too. Libraries consist mostly of New York Times best sellers like Twilight, Dan Brown, Stephen King, and Michelle Obama's memoirs. The women who work there are autistic and insufferable. i worked doing research for some time for a well-known professor at McGill University.Had the run of their 13 libraries (12 million items), and though the pay was not brilliant, but I loved it.

In the libraries in my city there are nót enough spots to study hárd, for 20 people maximum simultaneously at most, and that's for a city of 80.000 people, -/+ 7000. Well, I still go, but I'd have to - and do - place my study materials on a bookshelf, not a dedicated table. The baristas and cooks and librarians are presentable and helpful though, so I'm not complaining. I may not kick Gen-Z hangout-in-the-library teenagers to work, so. I stop at the library when I go for walks, I use their restroom, drink their water (the downstairs bubbler is cold), and maybe sit for a while. they've got a fair selection as well, mostly slop, but you can find something by most notable authors. I've got outstanding fees so I don't borrow.
besides that, I wouldn't want to hang around for long during normal hours. lots of undesirables, bad atmosphere.
they've sometimes got free books, if there's anything good I'll take it. they sell some for cheap too, but again, mostly slop.

My library did a big remodel wherein they destroyed the comfy aesthetic, cut the adult bookshelf quantity roughly in half, then filled the space with random multimedia shit like a "podcast studio" and a room with three TVs and just about every notable game system from the last twenty years, plus more public computers and tons of resource pamphlets for the homeless who stink up the place now.
I'm not a poor, so I buy basically any book I want and and download most of the remainder.

/lit/ threads about public libraries are fun because none of the complaints apply to mine. We even had a bit of a problem with the homeless in the turn of the 00's and 10's, but that was solved by the library locking the toilets and making it so you had to pay to use them. They've since then made them quietly free again.

there is some homeless sometimes in the big city library here in the netherlands. More annoying is muslim migrant boys that don't behave unless you threaten them. Most people are too cucked to do it, so I have to occasionally threaten kids to have peace. But most of the time it's fine. It has a large silence study hall that's usually filled with students but rarely full.

In the rare case homeless people cause problems, security injects them quickly.

I go to the library a few times a week to read. Works out great, and there's always several cute girls to make eye contact with and smile at to get some self-esteem boost goin'. Unless you're an uggo.

I went to the Library of Congress a couple of times and it was awful.
Only fat small black women work there who show contempt for you existing (the coat lady would not get up to take your jacket and bag until she saw a black person standing in line.)

That public libraries have become day centers for kids and families, and hangouts for homeless people and AA meetings doesnt surprise me. But it's a small library in a suburb with roughly 2000 items, most of which are children's books and entry-level literature. While we do have old libraries with vast collections in the city, pirating is often more convenient especially for non-fiction.

If I want to read Dosto at my local library I have to wait for 2 months, if I want to read anything besides world renowned classics I have to ask them to borrow it from another library because they don't have the book, if it's obscure there might be no copies at all. There's also a lack of language representation so I am forced to read translations. Besides, my local library looks like a high school cafeteria, with caustic ceiling lights that are always on. One advantage I seem to have over you is that I am in the anti-intellectual center of my country, so I rarely have to wait for books. They are always there. Nah, it's because gay copy right purposely makes libraries jump through a ton of hoops. I download audiobooks through my library, but I can only download one at a time, I only get 3 weeks before it gets deleted, and at any time the library might shift it out of their collection so that I am cut off from accessing it ever again.
