Seiobo is his best and most innovative book, War and War is second best. Everything else is good and nicely readable but it also has a lot of boomer musings about poorly understood philosophical concepts, trendy nihilism, re-made Bernhard/Beckett monologues and so on and so forth. He's one of the great writers of our time but he was born in a generation that wanted very hard to be the second coming of modernism and ended up writing tons of maximalistslop and bro-lit.

The "big four" are Satantango (enjoyable but pretty different than his later works), Melancholy (incredible but arguably his most difficult), War & War (incredible but one of the most depressing things ever put to page), and Baron Wenckheim (farcical and Pynchonesque). Start with whichever of those sounds appealing.

Seibo There Below is consistently good short stories.
The World Goes On is more hit-or-miss but has some gems.

Your scope of film knowledge is severely narrow if you liken those two. They really have nothing in common. There are plenty of uncommercial filmmakers here in America whose work more closely resembles the contemplative pace and philosophical attitudes of Tarr's work. Especially with reference to his latest work, PTA could more aptly be designated an anti-Bela Tarr. He develops his work in aspects opposed to Tarr's. For example his liberal despoliation of genre--to think of Tarr and genre in the same conceptual room would be farcical. I think you've got slews more films to watch, friend.

Awarding a post-modernist this year is as close as they'll come to acknowledging him. Hopefully the day comes when the Nobel isn't upheld as the pinnacle of literary awards. Satantango is just one of those books where it's hard to appreciate until you get a fuller picture, which makes it challenging to slog through the early goings until things start getting clearer. It's also one of those books where you should start a reread the moment you finish it the first time, the book is clearly designed for you to do just that.
