>What is /wng/ — Web Novel General?
A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royal Road, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more
>Why read web novels?
Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.
>Why write web novels?
Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

should i start writing RR reviews with a “sinometer”, aka measuring how chinese wn-like each WN is and arbitrating thus: low reviews for containing the taint of MTL-like chinesery; high reviews if they have western literary tropes and a lack of chinese ones?

your scale is backwards, westslopper-kun
As a westoid I hate to admit it but the east are dominating us in the webnovel literature sphere. At first I thought it was because of sheer volume of output but the more I thought about it the more I realized it was incorrect. No, the reason asians are so good at it is the lack of morals. While your average western webnovelist is busy laying out their characters moral values with sensitivity mittens for their latest slow burn epic, the average asian webnovelist has already skipped that shit with their edgelord mc already offing the first of their opponents and established a basic understanding of the world while sizing up the next competitor to murder and rob.
Honestly kind of humbling when you think about it.

I'm reading sss-class suicide hunter and gongja is a huge moralfag albeit
trying to make the world a better place and get good endings for all the bit characters and even enemies is like the central focus of the story since his actual cheat skills are so op it's not really in question that he could somehow win in the end. there's a lot of focus on contrasting him with his asshole predecessor the Flame Emperor who he stole the time regression power from and basically replaced

If you ran somebody's work through grok or whatever, and posted it on some nignog site, the odds of the original author ever knowing about it are close to zero. Even if they did find out, what can you realistically do? Not like those other text rip or audiobook sites care either. It's fighting windmills.

Saw this book being shilled constantly.
Read the first three chapters.
Character A says one word.
1000 words of internal monologue.
Character B says one word.
500 words of internal monologue from B’s perspective.
Then 500 more words of A’s inner monologue.
No wonder it has 2000+ chapters.

It one of the most popular webnovels out there, even years after it stopped being updated it's still in top 3 list of most read novels on many sites.
I see people here constantly bitching about how to attract more readers, monetise their work etc but they all ignore the obvious dark story with villain protag genre that is clearly very popular with webnovel readers.

Post winnies ur currently reading right now. for me i'm reading pic related (A Medieval Knight in a Martial Arts Novel). this review from NU sums up the premise pretty well
>The central thesis of this work is 'The Murim in Wuxia is bad at war'.
>The Murim characters have fighting skills, but they have little experience with mass combat. The story points out that a self defense weapon like the sword, and no one favors powerful battlefield weapons like the polearm because no one goes to full on battlefields. Their concerns are an elite assassin strike team rather than entire squadrons of enemies.
>The Murim are set up as civilians and smaller local powers living in a long period of relative peace. They do not use practical battlefield equipment techniques because it would draw suspicion from the imperial government. They focus more on nurturing a few high level talents rather than mass producing 'good enough' talents for large scale confrontations.
>The West is set as a contrast- it is a meat grinder locked into a forever war that has little room for the flourish or the exponential growth of a single individual seen in most Wuxia.

same here. but it was a *great*place for me to park my novels, develop covers, etc. RR doesn't allow "erotica" although it seems to be loosely defined. My one novel on RR, started out around ranking 90,000+. I remember being funny relating it was up to 70 or 60k in rank. I just checked, I'm below 40,000. I wouldn't call it a slow-burn path to success, but its something.
PS - moonquill and moonquillnovels are like two diff sites. the MQnovels (where I was) is where they (in an email) sent me to post my stuff with the WNs. Which is how you fine folks (and crabs, lol) came to be burdened by tina-anon. I guess I'll start transferring stuff to RR one at a time between projects and watch them all drown ina sea of isekai and harem and everything else. Such is life. RR seems to be the only game in town where you have a *chane* at real success getting started. By that I mean the little bit of monetization possible there. 200 a week would allow me to write full time. Tina-anon is a poorfag and while not ashamed if it, I aint proud of it either. Does lower the bar where what normal writers would laugh t would be a boon to me. I still enjoy writing though. I'm getting somewhere slowly. I'm finding my "tense" people complained about as I write first draft now. "Oh. past tense only. He DID something, he's not DOING it. I think individual chapters stand out and I like reading them myself now. My best trad novel though is an international financial conspiracy (comes after th events in Merry' Present) and my crystal ball says that might be a no no on RR.

After beating Ex33 by abusing the hell out of the 1HP build, I think it’d be pretty cool if there were a novel about an MC who grows stronger the more damage he takes. So he starts the fight by purposefully getting the shit kicked out of him, then just as he’s half-dead, he pulls out a bullshit move that wipes the floor in one clean swipe.
It could even be a misunderstanding comedy where other people see him as some selfless hero who draws enemy attacks to let others escape, when in reality he’s just annoyed that the mob enemies are chipping away at his HP bar way too slowly.

Author had a patreon and teased exclusive content on the patreon (the book was on the line of smut fantasy, and you can guess what kind of person the author is: you're correct). The announcement of hiatus was 16 days ago and there's no end in sight. Everyone who supported this story just got baited and betrayed, in my opinion, ESPECIALLY the people who supported on patreon.
>This could easily have been solved by having an outline, having an ending in mind, and having a solid backlog. Now that the story is off RS and unlikely to grow, or even recover to how it was before hiatus? Odds of the story continuing or concluding are basically zero. I cannot trust this author ever again.

This is where RI loses me as do many other "immature" novels. The authors (and readers) don't seem to understand that all of these things will still be used to judge someone. Even if you don't care about the lives of the guards you'll know what the person is like and will judge them for it.
Look at the current streamer drama. Very few people actually give a shit about Hasan's dog, but people still judge him for treating his dog like shit.
RI seems to suffer from this problem a lot. These kinds of things work in isolation, but he ends up doing so much fucked up stuff that eventually it should catch up to him and start preceding him.

Counterpoint: Why not?
I dropped Reverend Insanity after the MC killed the tribe girl that had a crush on him. The story is good, but I just felt kind of burnt out by the MCs increasingly predictable actions and thoughtless behaviour, and I'm not saying this in a moralfag "nooo you can't kill le hecking innocent!" sort of way, but in the "oh yeah that's going to bite him in the ass" sort. For all the talk I've heard about the MC being calculating and pragmatic, he is annoyingly impulsive and self-serving.
I'll probably come back to it later once the burnout wears off. Overall, its good but not as good as some make it out to be.

The bar is pretty low for webnovels. The main thing seems to be writing a lot and posting consistently. Beyond that is where skill and writing to market starts to impact things. There's 8 or 9 billion people in the world, no matter what you write it's almost guaranteed to be in at least a handful of peoples' strike zone.

The peaks hit like lightning, but some of the "downtime" arcs are kind of a slog. They might just not be for me though, I'm not really interested in kingdom building or reading about how he carefully gathered resources and farmed Gu for 100 chapters. I'm waiting for him to get back to scheming and dicking people over. The story made a big deal of him getting the immortal sovereign body, but he still feels powerless and weak and the underdog.

As a tag, I would say that Progression refers to a theme of progression (ie, improvement) across the story. Even if you don't have hard numbers on things, if you character is improving _significantly_ throughout the story, I would say that's progression.
This could even be for a story without any fighting, for example, a kid who wants to be a world class musician, starts at doesn't even know how to hold a violin, and then progresses to the point of competing in an audition for world's best violinist or whatever.
By significantly, I would say that the character doing the progressing should at least double in whatever aspect is progressing, even if you don't have raw numbers attached.

I would say it is, as long as from start to finish the MC "progresses" to a level at least twice as "much" as they started. And if you can identify it as a theme of the work in total, then yeah it's progression.
If in doubt, tag it as such and wait for people to complain before removing it if they make good arguments to do so.

The way you speak and the way you write are completely different. It could be nice if you tend to write a lot of purple, clunky, stilted prose, because it will make your writing more like an actual human telling a story. But for me, personally, dictation puts down the first thoughts from your head, and I find it's the second or third thought that's less cliche, more interesting, and more beautiful.

Xianxia without cheat system slop is progression fantasy, too. Something like The Hedge Wizard is progression fantasy with a sort of rpg-inspired progression system but without stats. D&D novels sometimes feel like progression fantasy where the characters slowly become more capable and you can tell because they defeat higher CR enemies in later adventures. So yes.

It's the male fantasy fad of our time (the female fantasy fad is romantasy).
Scifi I don't even know what's going on. I know the awards orgs got hijacked by ideologues but it's not like there's any independently published scifi that really captures my attention either (Peter F Hamilton started a YA series when the Salvation Series wasn't picked up for a fourth book; Pierce Brown's Red Rising series is wearing out its welcome and the ending will come as a relief).
RR's market seems to be a reflection of pop culture more than anything: literary versions of RPG video games, anime, superhero comics and movies, tv shows, fan fiction, and so on. And as a whole it's still better than what tradpub is shitting out.

For progression there has to be clear definition of levels and the easiest way to achieve that is by using numbers (like litrpg stats) , but levels or stages or something like that is also usable (like in traditional xianxia). Obviously there needs to be an actual character advancement and increase of in those statz through out the story.

I think it's actually the rise in autism, and more and more people being "on the spectrum." They want to see the totality of a character, quantized. I was apparently edging them by showing a character leveling up or improving a skill from time to time, but damn what they really wanted was a stat sheet at the end of every chapter to analyze.
I find them kind of annoying to write and track so I don't think I'll write explicit litrpg for my next stories, even if I keep other tropes (general classes, dungeons, etc).

There's a story in rising stars right now where the MC starts as a self-aware baby. Stories on RR can be absolute dreck that makes One Piece look like classical literature but they'll be popular if they have a good litRPG component.

There's a reason why these fics are mostly just one POV narratives with simple plots.

Um
Why do so many (fantasy) authors add these weird and stupid details into their story?
I started reading Water Magician. MC gets reincarnated into a new world in an isolated forest. He learns how to use his water magic and explores around the area. Suddenly we get a 1 year timeskip. Nothing has really changed, but 1 year has supposedly passed. A few small events happen and we suddenly get a 20 year timeskip... and nothing really changed again. He's still living in that isolated forest and hasn't explored far.
Do these authors never stop to think about what this implies? As unrealistic as such a character is, it implies that the character is perfectly happy with staying isolated forever. There's no story in this story. Why would I continue reading?
I guess I did it to myself though. Japanese stories always have these ultra passive (and probably beta) protagonists.

Was the logical outcome of the last Roman Institution.
The Roman Empire never truly fell after the last emperor was deposed. The system created by Diocletian and perfected by Constantine somehow remained intact. Each province had still its rex, just a barbarian one, alongside the administrative apparatus. But since the barbarians couldn’t write or read, that role was taken over by the Church.
Until the Reformation, Europe remained a Latin entity, united by a bureaucratic system that kept it culturally and economically cohesive, the fleshless skeleton of the Roman Empire: the Catholic Church.

No it wasn't, considering Rome was the only patriarch to actually do it. If anything, it only happened because the Byzantine empire (which is literally just one half of Rome) got fucked by Islam and couldn't project any power over the bishop of Rome.
It very much happened because the Bishop of Rome was guaranteed by the Franks, who were just not Roman.

But indeed, massive time jumps should be used as a major event marking a significant change in the main character or the world

advice: prioritize characters over setting and plot
>>24795903
Think of the powers you're giving your characters. The hardest thing for me when making a character in my setting, when they have superpowers, is coming up with a good one.
This happens to me because I first come up with the character and then give them a power, plus I'm not very creative when coming up with powers.
The best one I came up with is "a portal of about 20~ cm where you can send a single thing (something that has stuff inside it counts as a single object, so say a backpack with stuff in it counts as a single thing) 24 hours into the past/future to the user once a day to the location of the user at that time".
But most of the powers I come up with are "power makes the user stronger when protecting something", or "power gives the user voices on their head which act like an average twitch chat that they can moderate as if it were a chat", or "power gives the user the ability to fart out a cloud of invisible, odorless gas that they can control telekinetically".
simple stuff like that.

It's not creativity that is the problem, it's "originality". Originality asks readers to put in more work to engage with the text, and it isn't guaranteed to pay off in return. All stories naturally take on some degree of originality if they're being written from a desire for artistic fulfillment, but the artist should use their skill to limit that originality as much as possible, because there's no reward for making something that's harder to read.

People love badasses with a heart of gold, who are somehow also the underdog.
It’s why Spider-man is the most popular hero out there, and why Batman was quickly overshadowed by Absolute Batman the second he popped on the scene.
So come up with a hero. Give him/her a tragic backstory and cool power set.
Then put them up against demonically evil villains, who also have tragic backstories of their own, and serve as dark reflections of the hero.

I was looking for some modern day harems to read and this one was something else. I guess I can add it to the short list of incredibly long smut Magnus opus that for some reason someone just kept writing despite the little recognition they got.
Although this one specifically was basically asking for its any potential reader to get filtered since it starts off with like 5 chapters of very heavy netorare, something that is apparently completely absent in the rest of the webnovel.
You really have to admire the persistence of the author of this and it's contemporaries like "six times a day" and "an ordinary teenage sex life" to keep writing the same smut serial for years and years.
I wouldn't recommend this one specifically to thought since even if you can get over the beyond cucked start, it really isn't that good compared to some others of its kind.

I keep seeing discussion of "making it" and making money off of writing, but does any of you have a concrete goal in mind?
How much money would you want to be bringing in monthly just from Patreon to be okay with it?

I dream about making 3/4k a month and quitting my job to write full time but I don't think I ever would. It just seems too uncertain. If I was making fuckoff levels, like 10-40k as the super outlier authors do, I'd dedicate myself fully ofc.
