What are some of the best genre fiction books/series? I’m personally a big fan of the ASOIAF series, despite its flaws. And of course the Book of the New Sun series is great too. Basic picks, I know, I was hoping you guys could illuminate some stuff I’m missing.

Fantasy is a totally creatively bankrupt genre. The Hobbit + The Lord of the Rings is really its apex, anything written after that isn't worth reading.

Dune
Hyperion
Valis trilogy
Three Body
Neuromancer trilogy.
Peter Watt's Blindsight and Echopraxia (Firefall)
Children of Time series. Adrian Tchaikovsky is my fav modern scifi writer, but his earlier stuff is meh.
I have to agree with the first post after looking at my library. Fantasy has been left to rot with the romantasy crowd.

Look up the War of the Roses historical fiction Martin probably cribbed from. Forget the name. Sharpe and Patrick Obrien for more historical fiction.
