Is this book actually worth reading if you're trying to educate yourself in the trivium, or is it the kind of garbage praised by businessmen? The description of the book is very off-putting:

>You are told about the various levels of reading and how to achieve them – from elementary reading, through systematic skimming and inspectional reading, to speed reading, you learn how to pigeonhole a book, X-ray it, extract the author's message, criticize. You are taught the different reading techniques for reading practical books, imaginative literature, plays, poetry, history, science and mathematics, philosophy and social science.

>Is this book actually worth reading
Yes, most of what Adler and Van Doren wrote are still worth reading.

it's 95% a waste of time, very low signal-to-noise
I suppose in an ironic sense it's a good tool to learn how to skim, separating the wheat from the chaff

If you don't know how to read a book how would a book on how to read a book be helpful?

I read this and came away with little. Most of it is focused on non-fiction reading, and the small amount of fiction specific information is common sense and intuitive.

Just ask AI for a summary.

You are welcome

Probably because you were already doing 90% of what the book recommended. This book was written for the dolts like me who wishes to become an autodidact.

My only gripe with this book is that the author recommends writing in your book, which, unless your book is mass market C-tier literature, a modern day secondary source summary of a primary source, or a textbook, is psychotic.

If you’re reading some deep philosophical or political treatise this helps.
Most books don’t warrant anything more than a single read through, "inspectional reading" as Adler calls it.
