I loved The Ambassadors. Henry James had no trouble reining in his circumlocution for that work, and its entirety was bound round a charming almost virginal hero among a sea of french hedonists. both in theme and prose it was a superior work to the drunken golden bowl, a swaying, vapid, and nonsensical charting of the end of a great man's career. the endless frowsiness, the bluster, the "pale porpoise" comes to light, and for what? to transpose yet another handful of folks, all in varyingly unhappy stages of marriage, all revolving around some vapid secret? OH THEY'RE MARRIED, OH MARRIAGE, MARRIED MARRIED

Fuck you, James.

Imagine getting filtered by The Golden Bowl. Also imagine thinking the titular "Ambassador" didn't want to be like the French hedonists. He says explicitly, at least 50 times, that he would be like them if he were younger, or that if his life wasn't tied up being a cuck to a woman who will never marry him.

>Strether is not the ambassador
I'd like to see you explain. He is literally The Ambassador for the young cad's mother. He is literally sent there to convince him to come back and marry a nice New England girl to join family fortunes.

The entire swarm that meets Strether, trying to convince him to let Chad remain are the ambassadorS. The word is pluralized for a reason you absolute dumbshit.

Boys, boys
Might not the few James readers here post anonymously in a spirit of politesse, or even amity?
Now,
Shake invisible hands and make up

Strether wistfully wishes he could have been a French hedonist but only because he is too old and his life has become a dull failure to now realize that wish -- also recognizing that he did not become a French hedonist when he had the chance because it's not in him.
