I wonder what equivalent term they'll come up with for stoners once weed's been normalized.

i was able to maintain a job for a couple years when i was an alcoholic, barely though. the alcohol like leaks through your pores somehow, so you basically always smell like vodka to people, no matter how hard you try to hide it. also, if you don't drink for a certain amount of time, then you get panic attacks and start hyperventilating and youre arms go numb and are prone to having a seizure, so you always have to have booze handy just in-case. and you also have to walk everywhere or take a taxi everywhere since if you get pulled over, then you're fucked

Your post is mostly true except the driving part. In my years of functioning boozing I only got into 3 car crashes and only killed one motorcyclist, maybe.

I feel it's a reasonable descriptor. I've held down a job with a little real responsibilty and my own place for over a decade, I keep up with the parents, and I maintain cordial relations with a few older relatives who still care for me. Pay the bills and so on. The key to peace is to drink alone, a deeply pleasurable activity in itself, and not mix the drinking time with the outside world, and especially not to mix it with interaction with others. Every problem always starts with interaction with other people.

In my experience people vastly overstate the legal consequences of alcoholism and domestic violence. I drove drunk and beat the shit out of my ex wife for like 10 years and I have no criminal record.

Anonymous No.24799769 [Report]

i might have undiagnosed ADHD, i'd have a lot of trouble paying attention in school and my parents would always get pissed at me because i just wouldn't pay attention to anything in school. I did have a lot of childhood problems, i was always getting in trouble for rebelling against the teacher and hitting other kids who made me angry
idk wtf was wrong with me, lol, i just hated school i guess

This is true. Puritanism is the anomaly, not alcoholism.

>i might have undiagnosed ADHD
Good news: there is literally no diagnosis for ADHD. It's just a bunch of personality traits which have been pathologised for megabucks.

>Peckinpah's alcoholism was also affecting the filming schedule because every day he was consuming 180° proof Slivovitz (Šljivovica). However every two to three weeks Peckinpah would go on a binge resulting in lost shooting days while he was allowed to regain his cognitive abilities

That's a non-functioning alcoholic.
It's funny, because the film industry used to be replete with the functioning type: Richard Burton, Peter O'Toole, Oliver Reed, Richard Harris etc.

No, neither. Loving parents raised me in a stable, quiet, happy environment, I could read whole books when very young with fairly good comprehension, etc. I simply enjoy the sensation of being drunk for its own sake.

I was thinking about it today and while alcoholism is obviously unhealthy and to that extent the behavior is pathological in itself, I don't agree that every alcoholic must necessarily and always be drinking due to some other, underlying psychological problem. Sure this might be a common explanation mechanism, but I don't think it's a universal one. Room should also be made for the simple acknowledgement that the activity (drinking to excess, if you're doing it right and not getting smashed every night) is pleasurable in and of itself, hence the addiction.

The definition of functional is always the ability to function as a wage slave. Pay bills, go to work? You’re functional.
Way bigger than alcoholism or other drug use btw. Depression, autism, ADHD? Existential angst, feeling suicidal? Your family got killed in a plane crash?
Well the good news is you’re functional. You hold down a job. You’re making payments for food and an apartment. Doesn’t matter if it’s all booze and you hoard trash and don’t sleep. Can you fulfill your actual duties to society? Good enough.

Of you can be a famous and influential director while being a low functioning alcoholic what the fuck is a low functioning alcoholic?

That's not an unreasonable criterion/criteria to distinguish the two, even if you hate society/work/corporations and so forth. I can understand the criticism if you maintain that the above are themselves sick, but still, by definition, a functional alcoholic is able to function in society (however sick you may regard society itself to be) without causing overt problems or distress to others. I suppose from the purely clinical point of view, the ability to go outside, do stuff/tasks and not get into trouble is the general idea. While thinking about this, I also thought of "be productive", another sort of activity, but this does sort of play into your thing/fall into your trap a bit.

I sometimes brag about not drinking for over six years, but I was never drinking a lot, so it's rather meaningless. Quitting smoking on the same day seemed like a bigger deal, but it also went without a problem.
