No, neither. Loving parents raised me in a stable, quiet, happy environment, I could read whole books when very young with fairly good comprehension, etc. I simply enjoy the sensation of being drunk for its own sake.
I was thinking about it today and while alcoholism is obviously unhealthy and to that extent the behavior is pathological in itself, I don't agree that every alcoholic must necessarily and always be drinking due to some other, underlying psychological problem. Sure this might be a common explanation mechanism, but I don't think it's a universal one. Room should also be made for the simple acknowledgement that the activity (drinking to excess, if you're doing it right and not getting smashed every night) is pleasurable in and of itself, hence the addiction.
