The invocation of consciousness being derived from a brain is only ever correlative and not causal, you cannot demonstrate it as being causal. Examples of a brain being altered leading to an altered consciousness is to mistake the experience of consciousness for consciousness itself. The analogy would be that if I alter the antenna on my TV, and the appearance of the show on my TV is distorted, that would mean the *actual signal delivered into the antenna is distorted*, or even the actual filming of the show is distorted simultaneously with my antenna manipulation.
Furthermore, any example of a brain state mapping to a physical reality is at most hylomorphic, not explicitly material. Any reference to a particular brain state begs the question of universal brain state, or the hypostatic overlay of potential brain states.
All these issues are dealt with by just thinking about what substance must be.
