I see people constantly praising Shogun but none of the other books in the Asia series. Were they that bad?

King Rat is in a different category. It’s literature.
Like other anon said Tai-Pan is very good but is a bit more concerned with business and establishing the clan and coin plot which was supposed to bind the Asian Saga. Shogun just got the formula right for mass appeal. It’s also so standalone most people don’t even know it’s part of a series and even then don’t bother reading it because it’s tied together in giant time jumps (they want Shogun II).

Shogun is a good book and Mariko is the hero.

It’s a Folio Society edition and it’s not out yet. Part of the winter release due out soon. The price is 150gbp uk or 165 for rest of the world so it’s not cheap. It’s cloth bound in two volumes in large format and well illustrated though.

I loved Shogun but I'm afraid to say I got filtered by the rapes in Gajin. it awakened a level of moral-fag in me that I did not expect i never finished it.
