I haven't read Bataille, but maybe you're taking it too literally. I've read that, long ago, men would be "sacrificed" in mysterious fertility cults as a means of "impregnating" the earth with their blood thus sublimating their excessive sexual desire into greater conscious awareness or something along those lines. Tonsuring was also viewed as a symbolic act of self-castration. Most of it went over my head, admittedly, but it made me recognize that a lot of what was being stated was highly symbolic.
