I'm a recovering alcoholic who struggles to articulate himself and use proper vocabulary when talking to others. If I read enough books will that help me talk to other people? If so what do you recommend?

It can.
In all honesty talking to people will help you talk to people, but if you want to express yourself in larger and more complicated sentences then yes literature can help with that. But so will watching The West Wing.

Picking up new words and seeing how they fit irl can be a tremendous feeling but you need to have an ear for how they flow.
You also need to be okay with occasionally making a fool of yourself.

of course reading consistently will expand your accessible vocabulary. you can also try out flash cards and similar vocabulary building exercises.
watch videos of people who use language that you like, and let yourself get lost in an attempt to emulate them. there are many techniques, and you'll probably have to develop your own. glad to hear you're fighting for yourself, anon. fuck all and anyone who says otherwise.

another good way is simply reading the texts you like aloud. nothing too anachronistic at first, you don't want to sound strange.

I struggle with the same thing, I'm also a recovering alcoholic
I isolate myself a lot and don't socialize at all, but I think being able to articulate yourself and speak eloquently, I think it's like a muscle you have to practice. You might be gigabrained and understand a lot of big words and complex things, but you have to practice speaking to people to get good at speaking to people.
Personally, I'm holding out for when AI gets good enough to where I can just talk to it as if it's another person in my room, and that's how I'll get good at speaking. Most people don't want to be spoken to, anyways, they want to be listened to, so I think it's hard finding someone to practice speaking to

Absolutely.
I had patients who lived in black mold for years and the thing that kept them from turning into complete retards was reading.

The most engaging book you can think of that is also the most challenging in your condition.
It could even be genre slop, but you always need to yearn for the next reading session.

Read with a dictionary. Look up words and then reread the sentence using the defintion in its place. The more you memorize and define as you read then you'll have more command over your words. When you read ask yourself if you can define the word, I was surprised how I couldn't actually define basic everyday words in my head. Stuff like that helps me.

Well your post is comprehensible and articulate, so you’re not retarded, it’s probably just nerves. What you need is some kind of substance that will relax you and improve your self-esteem. Deuced if I know where you could find this magic substance. Good luck.

Milk Thistle. Your liver needs it. Thereafter? Persuasion literature (Robert Cialdini) and classical Rhetoric. The novels and the poetry is just material to graft onto that.

Speaking of course is best, direct practice for what you want to do, but reading will help with the ability to hold complex ideas over time, essential to good conversation as you must in real time, take in what they are saying, hold it, and formulate your thoughts.
