Is there anything worse than a movie cover for a book?
Anonymous No.24818387 [Report]
I care more about the material quality of the cover than whatever's printed on it

I don’t really mind as long as I can get it used for a decent price. That being said I do tend to buy original printings/designs.

There’s an undeniable, mostly irrational, fear of being seen as an NPC for reading a movie cover as if you wanted to read to the book only because you saw the movie. I say mostly irrational because just like reading anything to impress anyone in public it’s a bit of a self-centered view to think that anyone actually cares enough about you to look at what you’re reading or that theyre discerning enough to care if you’re a pseud. Pure vanity really.

But again, i do try to avoid them when I can for this reason so I won’t speak as if I’m above such thinking completely.

a lot of its because bookish types see their corner of media as exclusive and not for the common folk so they get offended when their little corner of the arts becomes a public commodity. pottery. not defending slop consumers but it is what it is.

When instead of a sticker they print the words 'now a major motion picture' in a big circle smack in the middle of of a otherwise acceptable cover.

No there's nothing worse. In fact I am in possession of that very same copy of Dune, my gf had it when we moved in and I started reading it but stopped due to the cover. So I've been thinking I'll buy myself a nice copy with a real cover, was shopping in Waterstones yesterday for some other books I needed and thought I'll see what their copies of Dune are like, looked at it and it's got "NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE" printed right onto the cover. Needless to say I did not buy it. I will probably find an old 80s paperback on WOB or Abe or something.

Made the mistake of reading Vineland before seeing One Battle after Another; I might have been able to enjoy the movie otherwise. Horrible adaptation-- essentially attempts to transfer 80's physical energy to the 20's (couldn't buy it) while ditching Pynchon's moral and political ambiguity for a rigid, too stupidly definite duality.
Most criticisms of Vineland here are way off the mark btw; it's one of P's better novels

also when it's the regular cover but now has the 'now a Netflix show!' sticker or the movie on like in your image. I hate buying those copies

If they took everything and made it at least 2 seasons long on netflix it would be 10x better than the book no doubt

I always loved this cover and I'm so sad I lost my copy with it.
Anonymous No.24822737 [Report]
aye, it's awful, but the cover situation has been clogged in shit for many a year.
look at the cover of today's sci-fi novels and compare them to what was the norm 40 years ago.
the whole sci-fi genre is in the crapper, desu. all that is digestible is being printed independently.

Have you ever purchased a book from like ebay or amazon or wherever and the picture they used was some classic version but once you finally get it it's the movie cover. I hate that.

I would rather have just the title or nothing at all. The spine alone can suffice for the title of a book and its author.

Non-nromie IPs should never EVER cater to normies, normies just eat any slop that's given to them, like pearls before swines, they know not quality.

If they adapted an obscure book that was out of print I would genuinely appreciate having a new physical copy no matter hot shitty the cover. But they don’t adapt obscure out of print books, they only adapt books that have never been out of print.

Yeah that's not bad. It works as a movie cover but have it be more of a silhouette isn't so gauche. Kind of lazy to have all three be the same image with different colors but that's an altogether different issue.
