Is there a cure for Oblomovism?
Anonymous No.24825799 [Report] >>24825827 >>24828288
starvation, hardship, war, strife, imprisonment, shame, commitment, fear, old Jane Fonda aerobic videos, youtube tutorials, iboga, free will

on a side note: did you ever manage to find an unabridged copy of this? there are like four common translations into english and they all seem to have been slimmed down. not that i'm ever going to read this again, but sheesh

realise that there are some things that have to be done, and nobody else is going to do them for you.

Pretty much this. Oblomovism comes from the privilege of leading a cushy comfortable life. I suffered from it as long as I was failing college and living on my parents back. The moment I had to find an actual job all that apathy, inertia, insolence and neglect kinda just went away. I am too fucking tired all the time to ever feel spiritually unable to act

My younger brother (23) is an Oblomov; all throughout secondary school he just wouldn't go. Mum would wake him up and he would just refuse to go. Then he managed to get a place at College to retake the qualifications that he needed and he went for a bit and then just wouldn't go. He carried this on with jobs too, had a job for a month and then just stopped going. When I was preparing to go to University at 21 he was jealous, and I told him if he worked hard for a year he could obtain an Access to Higher Education Diploma and go to University at 22, he said "no its too late." He managed to get a girlfriend in that brief employment, she was 17 and he 20. They stayed together even when she went to University and he would go to visit her and go out with her and her friends, but he felt too ashamed that he had done nothing with his life while she was living her life to the fullest, so he broke up with her. They're still friends and he still goes to see her and has sex with her, and she is still deeply in love with him. She hasn't even entertained another romantic or sexual partner and just hangs on that he'll take her back I assume. In the time that I've finished University, moved in with my girlfriend and started a Masters he has just sat at home watching YouTube and thinking. I would recommend him to read Oblomov but he hates reading and the last book he read was Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I have found myself at various points in my life struggling with an all consuming inaction, where I feel incapable of doing anything but stress and fear of ruining everything I worked for forced me into action eventually.

that's odd. i still live with my parents, but instead of slothing, i've taken up several practices to increase my happiness and overall trend toward personal development, including, but not limited to, moral conviction and emotional maturity. for example, i am a voluntary celebate of 10 years, haven't masturbated in 5 years, been sober for more than 10 years, live as though i were poor (not consumer), and ride my bike 20-30 miles a day to hang out at parks while i read, sew or cook. im certain the reason people have such a difficult time reveling in the goodness of God is because they are boxed in day in and day out. have you ever tried, instead of paying taxes, not being an athiest?

Apart from being naive and stupid, he did nothing wrong. In fact, he should have rested even more and thought about it for a bit longer.
