It is a spectrum of pale blue to warm orange overall where newer buildings are paler and bluer and older ones are warmer and oranger. You see these warm oranges mostly in brownstone walk-ups that are 50 years or older and most new apartments have recessed white lights while offices have fluorescents with frosted plastic coverings typically. Central Park's lights are a white with a tinge of yellow when they hit foliage and almost gray on tree bark but also bluer the more you look directly at them. The reason for this is that the bulbs are old and dusty often and intended to be yellow. You can tell the photo is edited because in reality the shorter light posts are yellowish but the tall light posts are typically very pale blue to flat white and in the photo they are both orange. NYC is beautiful but we, as a culture, don't really think about lighting as an art forum to master or cultivate despite its cheapness and massive impact (Grand Central and a few churches excepting). Most places are lit for safety and walkability over aesthetic and often in places like SoHo and the East Village you'll see neon cityscapes that are reminiscent of NYC movies but outside of there most buildings were demolished to make high rise construction with newer amenities (Upper East Side is worse for this than UWS's beautiful bay windows and Williamsburg's newer gentrified apartments are sometimes elegant forms of this against the backdrop of legacy row houses which are quite ugly but stolid and homey).

This thread isn't really the place for my question, but nobody will talk about this seriously in /pol/ so I'll ask here.
I'm a slav. I live in the EU. When I read American fiction or journalism, I notice something kind of peculiar about it. It's almost like there's a literary genre of "lamentation for America". When americans write about things like 9/11, or the storming of the Capitol, or the general lack of dignity in their politics, or something like that - their writing takes a very dramatic, poignant tone. It's like something sacred had been violated for them. Like Tolkien's elves lamenting the Burning of the Ships or something like that.
When we slavs write about our countries having problems, we don't really write like this (this is the same between Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Polish writing, as far as I can see). We regret it, of course, but we don't really take on such a tone. I also don't see much of that in the European political/social writing that I read (maybe some in German).
Which brings me to the question - where is this coming from? Are americans uniquely idealistic? Are slavs uniquely cynical? Or do none of these things really exist at all and I just happen to be reading the specific writers/sources that are like that (selection bias)?

America is the only Protestant country in the world and part of Luther's heresy was that everything is sacred while also nothing is (famously he got insight on the toilet). Americans turn everything into the sacred, even corporate events can have a flavor of the reverent and transcendent. This is, in one narrow sense, good because it binds you together but it is also bad because it makes the sacred look profane and the profane sacred. That being said, Americans do have conviction. No matter what you say about various countries, we did give the world freedom of religion and speech and did create our country explicitly with reference to Jesus's Gospel (look at the first declaration of Thanksgiving)--this gives America a certain blessedness that other countries just can't immitate nor can they really understand. Perhaps an example of this, my parents stopped going to church decades ago and we all visited a church in Italy. Not only did you have to pay to go to this church when Mass wasn't being said, the baptismal fount was a large fountain that had been allowed to go dry and was now used for people to toss coins in. Said bluntly, after telling my parents, we were nothing short of truly livid and shocked. We saw statues of famous royal donors and scoffed when they were larger than Saints. In some senses, America is perhaps one of the few countries that is Christian ex nilo versus having existed already and become Christian. Not only did other countries interbreed when missionaries came, per Catholic norms, but Protestants had no Church to stop their errors and just relocated or killed non-Christians. E. Michael Jones talks about this in A Bible and A Gun and basically American Civil Religion is a de facto set of dogmas and doctrines from Protestants. Quaker, Clavinist, and Lutheran theology are critical to understand America--heck, even freedom of religion has a Calvinist "You're either saved or not" aspect to it. That being said, most Protestants, under the hood, genuinely don't care about theology and just love Jesus. Even America's Amish are devout Protestants. The connundrum is America was founded and cultivated by genuinely believeing heretics and that's unique. Americans are genuinely, some at least, Jesus Freaks. Europe is basically dead to the Faith and Eastern Europe is in schism and basically just suffers perpetual warfare and corruption as punishment.

I feel like the difference between the US and the rest of the world comes from its unique position as a highly ideological state that has basically maintained the same regime since its founding. For the rest of the world, this is not the case. If we take Russia, for example, we understand very well that before the modern Russian Federation there was the USSR, the Russian Empire, the Tsardom of Russia, a collection of ununified principalities, the Kievan Rus, and so on, along with the Mongol invasion and other historical ruptures. In some sense, the Old World knows that its political systems are only temporary states of being.
Also, the 20th century was especially devastating for Europe in terms of political stability and continuity. The US, on the other hand, has kept the same system with only relatively minor adjustments. When we combine that with the idea of America as the greatest democracy to ever exist, it becomes more obvious why Americans seem to care so deeply about destabilizing events.

I think the social contract in Russia and adjacent parts of it has mostly been the same at least since Alexander III. You stay the fuck out of politics, pay your taxes and allow things like natural riches to be robbed - and in exchange, you are allowed to do what you want to do and benefit yourself and your close ones. This is really a kind of statehood that's close to the primal definition of state as stationary bandit. This is why Stalin's purges were such a watershed moment - for the first time it wasn't enough to just stay out of politics, you had to proactively stay in it or perish.
For what it's worth, I think Russia would have been a very different country if the Nikonian reform wasn't allowed to complete and the Old Believer christians weren't expelled - they were the Russian analogue to lutherans. But that is alternative history now, that ship has well and truly sailed.

I don't think it's "idealism" per se that causes this. Nor is it Protestantism.

When I grew up in America, there was just a feeling that "this country is sensible and stable". Things like genocides or political violence or tyranny happen in other, more savage countries or far away in history. There was never a sense of "reality" when studying that side of history; we felt like we weren't in it.

Also, we were quite accustomed to just being "the best" at everything. Biggest military? America. Biggest economy? America. Most movies and television? America.

Seeing the country realize that "we're still living in history" has been hard for some people, like being told that your parents never loved each other.
