You can choose to read philosophy, religious texts, mystics, textbooks from your field of expertise. All of these have value whether it's increasing your knowledge or enriching you spiritually, bringing you closer to God. But fiction is pure entertainment. High quality entertainment, Joyce and Pynchon require you to put in the work, but entertainment.
