I get it, put it out there, you inevitably get shit on, but why is this so common for poetry in particular? No one does it for the short stories I show them, or the essays.
Do people do this in art galleries as well? "Oh, that one's shit, he should have held his brush at seventy degrees instead"

I agree with you, OP, that criticism itself isn't bad, but there is something suspect at times in people's insistence upon critique before they engage in anything like appreciation.
If you've ever attended a CW workshop, most people's writing sucks ass, but the point is to try to understand what they're saying first. Its a good environment to spot those who are compassionate, and those who are self absorbed. In an artistic sense if nothing else

Yes. A good academic physics paper reveals a true insight about the world. A good poem reveals a true insight about the world. In both cases, the author has expended a good deal of effort coming to that insight. Why should one be less personal than the other?

However, good poems are not particularly more personal than other good pieces of writing that might broadly be classed as "intellectual endeavours", such as novels, essays or research papers.

Why are confessional novels or essays much less influential? My guess is that, while the confessional style is barely tolerable in small, poem-sized doses, it would become completely unbearable in longer formats.

Poetry is really hard to write and it's very easy to make someone that's absolute garbage and embarassing to read. You basically have to be really good for someone to take you even halfway serious, it's not like with panting where you can be average and people will look and say "well, that's a nice painting". It's either great, or total garbage.

I don't think it's common at all. Maybe your poetry is just worse than your prose. I personally find errors in prose more readily than errors in poetry because poetry can be a lot more fluid in its structure.

Funny, I feel it's the exact opposite, that poetry has a lower barrier to entry than painting.

With visual arts, if you follow some basic guides you can paint some nice looking landscapes. Even if your technique is technically shit and the art isn't all that interesting, the average person will look at it and say "well, that looks nice"
I guess its technically easier to go and write bad poetry, all you have to do is take a bunch of words and put them on a meter. Or worse, if you can't even do that, you can do free verse. But it's really difficult to do that and have someone read it and say "that's some nice poetry", unless you're actually a good poet.
