I'd say it says more about where civilization as a whole has gone rather than just an individual work. That's just one example in a sea of abused literature.
Most? I'd maybe throw Frankenstein above it.
The real question is how does abuse of a work make it an artistic failure? We're looking at a reflection of a refraction of an image of the image of the subject, it's so abstracted from the source material that I frankly believe it leaves the books untouched.

There seems to be this trend where certain parties and people are appropriating Tolkien and using him for nefarious purposes, twisting the original meaning of his work.
