Yeah, adding on to this, the Talmud. WW1 was justified on Rabbinic Jewish grounds because it symbolised the crushing of the Christ Consciousness worldwide (World War, the Christ dying for humanity Worldwide...). There's a lot more to go into.

I don’t remember if there’s much emphasis on trenches specifically, but the first 100 pages or so of Journey to the End of the Night are worth reading.

all warfare is bleak you might romanticize it until four feet of spear passes through your intestines or an fpv drone drops a grenade on you
