/wng/ — Web Novel General
All Hallows Slop Edition

Previous: >>24839354

>What is /wng/ — Web Novel General?
A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royal Road, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more

>Why read web novels?
Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.

>Why write web novels?
Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

It really is kinda terrifying how the AI-prose novels keep doing better and better. This recent one is literally at 5k followers and it's obvious as hell.

My only cope is that it's still a human mind guiding the story, and story has always been what matters most, but sheesh...it's getting scary out there.

(You) better release your story soon and carve out a name for yourself. The flood is coming.

You can't say shit like that without giving names or links.

They may be getting better metrics right now, but it's a turkey illusion at best. AI is still trash at long form content because of token limits. Memory is the real bottleneck that they're going to run into. If anything, web serials will be easier to gatekeep from AIjeets because of this fact.
Anonymous No.24845539 [Report] >>24845553 >>24845571
>>24845514
Well like I said I don't think memory matters because I'm pretty sure it's just the writing itself being churned out, but the story is made by the person. It's probably first-drafted then completely written by AI
So it kind of killed the art of prose
Which contrary to what you said opens it up to ESLs a whole ton

would there be any market for a "sitcom" novel? imagine something like seinfeld or curb your enthusiasm, no real plot, character development or anything, just a bunch of funny sketches
Anonymous No.24845552 [Report]
>>24845544
Market it as slice of life comedy and yeah, I can see it potentially doing well. Still off-meta so it'll need to be really high quality, but sure, it's possible
Assuming it's fantasy, actually. You mean real world sitcom? Honestly I don't think so

And where's the actual proof? Mediocre writing doesn't have to imply AI.

>It's probably first-drafted then completely written by AI
You and I have very different interpretations of something being written by AI then. I'm envisioning some get rich quick grifter opening up a chatGPT window and typing 'Generate a story about X with Y elements'. Your example is more like someone couldn't be assed to learn how to edit and is just harming themselves in the long term.
Anonymous No.24845577 [Report] >>24845581
>>24845553
There is no such thing as proof when it comes to AI, anon.
But it's obvious. If you can't see it, my condolences
Anonymous No.24845579 [Report] >>24845591
>>24845571
It's still an author that had AI fully rewrite his prose and is seeing more success than probably anyone in this thread will. That's not bleak to you?
Anonymous No.24845581 [Report] >>24845590
>>24845577
No, I can't see it. I can see the extreme paranoia though.
Anonymous No.24845590 [Report] >>24845601

I really don't call AI easily. But anon. It's obvious.

AI is most recognizable by the constant, melodramatic turns of phrase
>The cold spray pricked his skin, each drop a tiny sting of acceptance.
>Soon the machine gurgled to life, promising chemical salvation in ceramic form
>She moved with the efficiency of someone who’d refined her daily routine to an art form.
this is just from a very quick scan of chapter 1.
come on, man, are you this much of a newfag? This isn't how people wrote pre-2020. It's so obvious it's painful
>BUT ACTUAL PROOF????
you're the reason it's spreading
Anonymous No.24845591 [Report] >>24845602
>>24845579
If the author was still behind the entire story and just got help with the way it was delivered, I don't mind as much. It's still scummy, obviously, but it's nowhere near as bleak if it was some fag just prompting and getting 5k followers.
Anonymous No.24845601 [Report]
>>24845590
Funny thing is that not only are these AI but these are the type of AI results that people who actually use chatbots start rerolling/remaking the chat when they appear because they just get worse and worse once the ai comes up with one.

>but it's nowhere near as bleak if it was some fag just prompting and getting 5k followers.
Yeah that would be the apocalyptic, writing-as-a-career is completely over, anon. It's still bleak to see the first hints of that awful fate starting to manifest. Your sentence-level writing no longer matters from a career perspective. People are happy with AI prose
Anonymous No.24845606 [Report] >>24845615
>>24845602
Thing with AI is that it's basically undetectable if you aren't used to it but once you're familiar it becomes very easy to spot. So people will get more suspicious the more come out.

RR is doing a pathetic job of enforcing the tags though when it's on the frontpage and not tagged.
Anonymous No.24845615 [Report]
>>24845606
they have a staff of like 6 people so fair enough lol. even if it's kinda obvious there's a bizarre alien chance the author just likes the chatgpt style...
Anonymous No.24845616 [Report] >>24845625 >>24845634
if AI can produce better quality shit than humans, who tf cares. right now it's not there yet so there's still a place for human writers, but once it's there and AI can produce stuff that's more enjoyable to read and has higher artistic value, the world will be a better place. the only losers are overpaid, opinionated, and entitled writers, y'all don't deserve jobs and i'll be happy to cut out the middle man when it's possible
