He references lots of chivalry literature of its time. It isn't necessary to read them, but make sure to have an annotated version. It has some of arthurian legend and also lots of general literature (Greekroman mythology, christianity, I can't remember if it had nordic myth). So yea, Homer, Virgil, and Ovid should help you understand some references but as I've said before, you can just stick to the footnotes.
Try to read it with a blank mind, without preconceived ideas. The message is not only pretty simple but also directly said multiple times through volume 1.
