How do I put the phone down and read
I read ten pages and my brain starts humming. I'm Gen Z, and my attention span is almost nonexistent. If I read eleven pages today and twelve tomorrow, would that actually make it better? How long would it take to notice a difference? It hurts, bros. I'm trying to put the phone down and find peace. This week has been good, but I still can’t focus on anything. I’ve been journaling too. I even put the phone in another room when it’s reading time.

>my brain starts humming
It happens. Don't perceive it as a failure, it's just one more thing you have to consider when reading books, along with turning pages and blinking.
>How long would it take to notice a difference?
They say it usually takes 30 days to break the initial hold of the addiction. 90 to really push yourself into a new way of living.
> I even put the phone in another room when it’s reading time.
That is wise.

If you wanted to, you would. Ask yourself if you really want to, ask yourself what it is that you want, that you really, truly want.
Then do it.

It's true. Stop trying to force yourself to read boring shit that you don't like and pick up something that actually interests you.

Go to the library with your book and nothing else. As your brain adjusts it will be easier, you’re just detoxing from the phone addiction right now. It takes roughly a week to become not retarded again and a month+ to fully reset.
If you go back to your old habits it goes away, but that’s only if you do a full relapse and waste your time for hours per day, so recognize when it’s happening and stop

That is fair. But there are days where even interesting books fail to keep my attention. The brain is an organ like any other, it has its days.

You have to find something that interests you and keep reading without distractions until you get into The Zone (after which reading that session will be easier.)

You can retrain your brain over time.

My friends all look at their phones so much. When I visit my parents, they both are on iPads. I feel very alone when I do this, but I suppose that's the point. All the doomscrolling has rotted my sense of peace. Thanks for the suggestions.

I set extreme conditions like not eating breakfast until I finish 20 pages right out of bed.

It's just habit anon. I would advise to start light, don't struggle with difficult books yet but go for some easy to read fiction (pick whichever genre you enjoy). Also don't start an 800 page tome, but a novella or collection of short stories just to get into it. The more you read the easier it gets, eventually your brain will start humming when doomscrolling instead of reading

This just means that you want to eat more than you want to read, and that you've somehow maladjusted to this reality by inverting it in a way that serves your reading goals, but only at the cost of your well-being. Don't play mind games with yourself. Your mind will always win.
