Why is /lit/ taking the rise of webnovel so poorly? it's one of the fastest growing market, so much that being a webnovel writer is considered a legit job in east asia. and unlike traditional publishing you got organic reader base that keeps growing every year and actually ENJOYS reading.

I don't care about what masses of asian slop and their readers are doing

Because they are garbage, simple as. If there's a legitimate one, I will start caring. And that means no fantasy, no sci-fi and no fucking isekai.

How is this different to A03?

Ao3 disallows non-fanworks or commercial projects, and webnovels are primarily produced to make money.

I seethe about this daily because there is no writing repository site where I can post original short fiction without competing against professional sloppa farmers who update 4 times a week to appease an algorithm.

All I want is 5 kudos and a comment saying "neat", but instead I have to deal with paying for art, ads, marketing, and expand the work to fit the expected word count for genre fiction because people care about that for some reason. This is preferable to writing 70,000 words for a story that might not break into rising stars and be rendered immediately unviable.

There has never been a webnovel with passable prose, and never will be. It's anime without pictures. Subhuman trash.

Not true literature and I despise those who read it.

Although I would totally dive into this market and mass produce AI slop for plebs to become filthy rich if I had the chance. Money has nothing to do with morals, anyways.

Doesn’t AO3 have an Original Work tag for non-fan works?

The what? In any case, it looks like gay weeb shit for women and retarded faggots who haven't read a real book in their life.

I haven't been too much into webnovels, but my problems with them are mainly:
1. Mostly getting published in chapters. Means that it always needs to be dramatic or very interesting of some sorts, so one will come back and read it. The main point of focus becomes that every chapter ends with a cliffhanger or some shit. The story isn't told in a Dramatic Arc kinda way (which I mostly prefer), but looks like a fucking sine function. Can't go in too deep for too long because it needs to end on something exciting.
2. Too long. Publishers write a webnovel that is successful and thus they don't want it to end. Instead of a well rounded work, it becomes a never ending slop story. The longer it becomes, the higher the chance of the author fucking up somewhere and making me hate the whole thing. Only possible because of the publishing in chapters. I don't even like to read books that are over 400 pages. I won't stick around for something that is like 8 times the bible. No matter how often I try, the author has said most things in the first 50 chapters and the rest becomes a sad try to keep it alive.

Well until I had double checked just a bit ago I was under the impression that it was for essays on fannish topics and original fiction which was strictly part of a fannish genre revival like regency romance or the like.

It must have been rewritten at some point because I remember it being a lot more restrictive and specific.

Somewhat confusingly, AO3's rules explicitly state that "works must be fanworks", but then the FAQ to those rules explicitly states that original fiction somehow counts as fanwork and is allowed, as long as it isn't commercialized or a preview of a paywalled work.

Their definition of fanwork is rather broad. My understanding is that it ends up applying to basically any creative work created because you're a fan of something, like being a fan of furries, or fantasy.

The tos section links to what they consider non-fanworks that should not be posted and it is stiff like scripts, personal diaries, or various banned formats like incorrect quotes or lists.

I think it is mostly to catch anyone trying to be slick and make money off the site.

From what I’ve read, webnovels seem very childish and poorly written. I’m not sure how much of it is just bad translation, but it’s literally the same format over and over again. There is no prose aside from the bare minimum needed to convey the story, it’s almost all told through dialogue and monologue, which makes it quite a pain to read.

/lit/eratis are pseudointellectual snobs. If it's not McCarthy level self sucking, they don't like it.
