I unironically want to see what Mieville's upcoming big novel is going to turn out.

I've just finished Vance's Demon Princes series, and overall I was very pleased with it. It was quite interesting to see the setting develop from a rather cookie cutter piece of raygun gothic to its own semi-modern beast. The books are all nicely succinct with very little unnecessary fluff, but even so, Vance manages to do a lot of scene-setting without indulgently wasting pages in the same way that a lot of sci-fi writers do. The characters are generally charming, if sometimes a little one-dimensional (which, I think, owes mostly to their transient nature within the books). I particularly liked the main character, who was a very fun Bond-Poirot-Batman blend and not without flaws or setbacks. The interactions between characters and their mannerisms often had a very quaint and pleasant transatlantic quality to them that I absolutely loved, despite not being American myself.

The main weakness of the series in my opinion is in Vance's penchant for incredible contrivances (the most egregious one, which I won't go into to save spoiling anyone, ends up colouring the rest of the series), and the occasional use of deus ex machina to keep the plot going at a breakneck pace. That being said, I thought about it a little and he's guilty of exactly the same thing in the Dying Earth series (ok, mostly Cugel's adventures but nonetheless), where I didn't take any issue with it. I think I found it more egregious because of the difference in setting from Dying Earth's end times mythological era (however much science appears) to a much more readily understood sci-fi setting ostensibly built on the scientific process and such.

There is quite a publication gap between the first three books and the last two, which are generally regarded to be better and were written following the Gaean setting being fleshed out in other works. I broadly agree.

Overall, if you care for the opinion of a random poster on sffg and enjoy traditional sci-fi or even just Vance's other works, I'd highly recommend it.

It's amazing how people still read boring pulp-writers like Vance when he was supeseded years ago by better authors like Wolfe and Shea.

How many books do you go through a week? It feels like you post a review every other day.

I know the guy you're talking about (the one who reviews modern literature and attracts a ritual poster telling him his reviews are shit) and I'm not him. I hoped to make that clear by not leaving a rating. The last time I posted here was a few weeks ago enquiring as to whether the series was worth reading, so I thought I'd leave my thoughts here too.

I like Wolfe, but he fell off rather quickly in my view. His works past the turn of the century are not to my taste - of the ones I've read, Wizard Knight was acceptable but a little anemic, Home Fires failed to spark my interest, and I'd go as far as to say that The Sorceror's House was the closest thing to a poor book that I've seen from Wolfe. They all make a poor comparison with the Sun cycle, Cerberus, Doors, the Soldier books and so on in my personal opinion.

I certainly won't claim to be an expert on Shea, but after reading A Quest for Simbilis suffice it to say that I will not be going back for more.

Nice reading comprehension, retard. I never once called Wolfe pulp in my comment. I called Vance pulp, which he is.
>>24869533
Wolfe objectively peaked the Dying Earth genre and turned it from genre fiction towards literary fiction. Why people read the pulp trash that Wolfe ripped the best parts from is really beyond me

This is what Goodreads says for everything, not just novels. Seems more reading rate is returning to mean. I haven't read relatively much this year. It's mostly been the last few months. That may charge next year, or not, I won't know until it happens or doesn't. All I know for sure is that there's too much of everything and the I have priorities that don't make sense even to me. You may or may not be aware that that I used to use a tripcode and am the founder of the Goodreads group.

Apparently I've read 120+ novels published this decade and 500+ for this century. Huh. A good bit more if counting works shorter than that. I don't expect this to change anytime soon, if ever. Eventually I want to get around to reading some old anthologies/collections/magazines, but who knows if I'll ever get around to that. Novels though, probably not so much, aside from those I'm asked to read.

Vance stories are not really the same kind of experience as Wolfe stories, so I don't agree that Wolfe made him redundant. They scratch different itches.

I've been shilling SE here for years. Great series. Hard to believe it's ending. I like Ruocchio's writing enough to try his next series but SE is uniquely maximalist and I don't quite see him matching it in a fantasy setting. I'm hoping he does another long space opera sequence in the future.

Also this. It's hard to appreciate PB taking longer on books when two of his best, Golden Son and Dark Age, were turned out so quickly, but I have no doubt I'll enjoy Red God whenever it actually drops.
