Are there any good totally free conversion software to use for converting .mkv files to a format that works with google drive?

iirc if you go the google drive route you don't have to worry so much about toaster-ing the bitrate, it'll get processed through youtube's servers so it runs a lot more reliably than archive or pomfs or any of those
last I saw the major thing you need to do with google drive is to flatten the subs so they're burnt into the video instead of soft subs.
there's some theoretical way to bundle softsubs into gdrive I think but I recall it was spotty enough results from the technique when I first encountered it that I didn't pursue it futher

there's a walkthrough I did for encoding for it to abuse for this sort of thing a while back, I'll try digging through desuarchive but it's probably out of date
afaik basically any filedump site you can hotlink will do it? like the pomf type stuff usually works, but they often ask you not to throw full eps up so I usually keep them around as a backup more than a mainline solution
I should probably put together a modern version of my walkthrough, use a modern handbrake, poke at the options a bit, figure out if I should use x264 or 5 or whatever for best compatibility
sometimes you can get leads for where to host stuff by looking at what other people are doing, like right click on the video on some channel you think is working well, see what the file address is
sometimes it's some funky thing like where the channel's owner runs his own fileserver for, sometimes it's something really easy to figure out like 'bigfilesandnoquestions' or whatever
