The "kira-kira" Newtype sensation is practically a drug, Shuji is Machu's dealer, and she joined an illegal underground fighting ring so she could get high on Newtype razzledazzle and adrenaline, even if she's risking her life to do so. She has no conventional career ambitions and is willing to abandon her life completely to accompany Shuji to Earth, where she had no real goals beyond "Living in space sucks, I wanna see nature".

The scene where Machu pilled Jezzi's pomeranian off Shiiko is symbolic of it. She tricks the dog into thinking she had something for it, then insults it when the dog was disappointed. If your character is mean to animals, they're probably not a good person overall.

See, that's a good idea for a Newtype story: Tyler Durden-type split personality triggered by psycoframe. You can add some sort of bodily possession element to it.

She's as impulsive as Kamille (maybe even moreso), and as prone to Newtype addiction and poor decision making as Katz, Hathaway, or Quess. The difference there is Machu isn't denying reality to live in her own world, she simply prefers the world she's found instead. You could argue that Quess was clinically insane, unable to recognize that she was being manipulated and turned into a weapon of war to kill her own family, seeing little value in lives she wasn't connected to. Machu on the other hand is clinically SANE. She knows exactly what she's doing, and in the times where she realizes the scope of her situation has gone beyond her expectations she reacts appropriately, even if it's to steel herself to continue.

I think that makes a big difference. I can't stand Katz, Quess, and Hathaway, while I like Machu as a character.

My favorite scene with Shiiko was her walking with Machu in the sunset while musing over how she's basically throwing her life away. The colors made me think of a witch being walked to a pyre/gallows though I doubt that was what they had in mind. Still pretty neat though
