what makes Cross Ange so good is that it takes itself seriously. The characters all treat their plight seriously. Contrast with something like Daimadaler which is 100% a joke and it's easy to see why Cross Ange is so good.
Nothing against Daimadaler, it's just that there are more shows like it than not. Cross Ange feels unique. Or maybe I just haven't seen enough anime. Could be both.
