Been working on a couple of things for a while, so I decided to share them with /m/

>Mobile Suit Gundam (Tomino novelization from 1979): https://www.mediafire.com/file/0okjjd28or6hl9b/Mobile_Suit_Gundam_-_Yoshiyuki_Tomino.epub/file

Sourced and formatted to .epub from a fresh OCR of the 2004 Stone Bridge Press omnibus edition uploaded to the Internet Archive (https://archive.org/details/mobilesuitgundam0000tomi_d6n5).
Unlike the first edition, this one uses the standard names: "Zaku" instead of "Zak", "Char" rather than "Sha", etc. I did my best to retain the styling of the print edition, but it's likely there are some OCR artifacts, like missed italics or possessives.

>For the Barrel (a "reinterpretation" of the Tomino novels published by Newtype Magazine in the early 2000s. Text by Gichi Ohtsuka, character designs by Shigeto Koyama and mecha design by Junji Ohkubo): https://www.mediafire.com/file/nhvdrzqa1s3fqgv/For_The_Barrel.epub/file

Sourced and formatted to .epub from the translation by "TheIdeon" at https://gunbusternovels.wordpress.com/2021/03/31/for-the-barrel/
While it retains everything translated to the website, messy formatting and all plus picture footnotes and other annotations, it does not include any images out of practical concerns. Editing the whole thing is beyond my abilities, and adding the scans as attachments would inflate the file size considerably and lose a lot of resolution. Complete scan of the relevant Newtype pages is here: https://imgur.com/a/barrel-TewsF0g
Furthermore, the "World's End Barrel" extra material (published in the supplement Newtype.com: "WEB", get it?), which detail some of the characters and the setting, are moved to the end as their own section. Scans here: https://imgur.com/a/ZMQpm6q
"Body" text in serif. Other notes in sans serif.

>Why are you using the shit 2004 version when the 2012 is correct?
Because, in case you didn't read the post, I found it on the Internet Archive. I'm not in the mood to import, destroy, scan and do this entire thing all over again just for a few updated names. It's the same translation dating back to 1990: you can check yourself.

>It even has further updated names.
I don't know what other names they could've updated in 2012, since every familiar character is written correctly in this one.

I use Atlantis Word Processor to easily convert document files to epub. If you know of a better tool to do the job, let me know. And no, Calibre is dogshit; I've had it mangle even the most basic RTF file.
Sometimes I do some cleanup with Sigil, but they looked fine on my computer, so I saw no need. Here's a screenshot as a preview of sorts.

You'd have to be more specific as to what is so wrong about them that you come with "the shittiest formatted epubs imaginable". You want more margins? Fancy file formatting? What for? You can adjust all of that shit on your Kindle.

Shit page breaks, paragraph formation, clearly isn't proofread for shit because there's a ton of p/b/d issues, still has major character name issues, etc.

>Shit page breaks
I had to do major manual line breaks in For The Barrel because the formatting on the original website is a goddamn unreadable mess. TheIdeon just did a raw translation of the magazines, with some formatting, but very little that could be transplanted as an ebook.
The Tomino novels look fine. Be specific as to where the issues are, and I will correct them.

>paragraph formation
>clearly isn't proofread for shit because there's a ton of p/b/d issues
I was clear in the OP that the OCR process had issues. I use actual OCRing software, not shitty AI tools.

>still has major character name issues
Which names have issues? Again, BE SPECIFIC. I had to correct a shitton of OCR name errors like "Kick Dorn" or "Chiwav", but the names of all major characters are fine. Also, Challia has two ls and Kycilia has one.

Now this is interesting: Mikimoto made, indeed, inner illustrations for the 1987 Japanese reprint:
>Part 10: Kusko Al
Apparently, he also did art for the Zeta novelizations.

However, neither of the English releases have included them (rights issues?). The 2004 Stone Bridge translation that I converted only come with the old settei art from the TV series drawn by Okawara or Yas.
I wonder if any of the digital Japanese releases have included them, but I can't find them digitalized anywhere, except for the odd picture on Yahoo Auctions. And buying old books in Japan to mutilate them sounds both expensive and extreme.

Anon, you're looking at it backwards. The original Schodt translation (right, picture of the scanned book) has place names like "A Baoa Qu" or "Luna II" in italics.
I took the liberty to correct all of that in the digital version (left, epub file), both out of ease of reading (unlike ships, place names aren't written in italics; quotations at best, and only the first time) and because the OCR software mangles italics, especially with unfamiliar words.

If anything, the novel says Sayla just turned 20, which is an age-up from the original series where she was just 17. Amuro's age is never mentioned in the novel dialogue properly, only that it's mentioned that Sayla is a year or two older than him, so he's 18 or 19.

The comparison to Sayla's known age give a more exact range of 18 or 19 for Amuro at the time, and that description comes after the book already declared the year being 0080, so Amuro is not even 20 years old by 0080.

Looking at the JPN Wiki, they peg him at 20, so I'm going to side with them. They know their own language after all and are spot on with their Wiki postings unlike the ESL side that has shit.

Plus, the comparison to Sayla's age is only a guess. You can speculate that someone is one or two years younger than you, but actually be closer in age, which is the case here.

Either way, Kadokawa is just wrong.

Quick Japanese lesson: to say that someone is "X-years old", you do "X-sai": i-ssai, ni-sai, san-sai, etc. Grammar rules aside, all numbers follow that same formula, with one exception: 20 years old, which is "hatachi".

Japanese wiki is a more accurate than anything the ESL community could ever produce. So yes, if the wiki says he's 20 I'm going to assume they'll understand the source material versus a shit ENG version people keep clinging to.

>Chapman Jirom was, however, an admiral with considerable personal ambition. He had been given a chance to win the favor and trust of the Supreme Commander, and he knew that if he succeeded his future would be bright. If the war could be concluded on favorable terms, he would probably be treated like one of the Zabi family. In fact, without Dozle and Kycilia Zabi around to interfere, he would probably be given a position in power second only to the Supreme Commander himself.
>At the same time, Chapman was a fairly rational man, fully aware of what could happen to him if he linked himself too closely to Gihrenโ€™s fate. Gihren had, after all, just decided to sacrifice one of his most trusted men, not to mention thousands of his troops and his own sister. But if he, Chapman, worked fast now to help Gihren eradicate potential future problems such as Dozle and Kycilia, he was convinced he could avoid Randolphโ€™s impending fate. Going along with Gihren, he quickly concluded, was a gamble, but it would be worth it.

No not Amuro, I mean other character

ไบŒๅๆญณใซใชใ‚‹ใ‹ใชใ‚‰ใฌใ‹ literally means "whether he will become 20 or not". Kusko has the impression Amuro is not yet 20 or he just turned 20 very recently. I would do a mental gymnastics and write his age as around "18-20" on JPN wiki if I can instead of definitive label

For anyone interested in Tomino novels, here's a rough breakdown for the Gundam side of things:
>Mobile Suit Gundam (1979)
The "Novel Trilogy" is the obvious one, which is Tomino's expanded and more specific concept for the series, which is completely different from the TV anime on purpose. It's his attempt at a more hard SF and mature idea of Gundam.
Adjacent to the TV anime is "Secret Rendezvous", a 130~ page complete story about the intersecting relationships of Amuro, Lalah, Char, and Sayla, primarily focused on Amuro and Lalah's titular "Secret Rendezvous".
>Mobile Suit Z Gundam
Tied into this is Tomino's five volume Z Gundam novel. It is completely unrelated to the Gundam Trilogy and more another take on Z Gundam.
>Char's Counterattack
Hi-Streamer and Beltorchika's Children are slightly different takes on the film narrative, with the majority of their value moreso being derived from Tomino's own commentary (so, don't read the Beltorchika's Children manga. Come on, you're an adult, you can read a sub-200 page novella).
Hathaway's Flash and Gaia Gear are also connected to this phase of Gundam despite timeline placements.
Hathaway's Flash is a "coda" to CCA, essentially being a 3 volume epilogue to the events portrayed in the Beltorchika's Children novel.
Gaia Gear is a "coda" to the character of Char Aznable as a whole, through the 'memory clone' Affranchi Char.
>F91
The F91 novel makes the work more... "digestible". Recommended just for that.
Related but not really is the entirety of Crossbone, which has influence from original Tomino materials but is not written by him.
>VIctory
The V Gundam novel. Obviously. Only thing here not translated.

Pretty much all Tomino works beyond Gundam are untranslated. A taste-
>WIngs of Rean (6 volumes)
>Aura Battler Chronicles (11 Volumes)
>Garzey's Wing (5 volumes)
>Space Runaway Ideon (3 Volumes)
>Haran Banjo Series (4 Volumes)
And his completely original work "The King's Heart" is something of interest.

Gaia Gear, Hathaway's Flash, Beltorchika's Children, F91, and Hi-Streamer have all been translated by Zeonic, who has some behind a patreon paywall (namely Gaia Gear).
The Z Gundam novels and Secret Rendezvouz got translated by GunbusterNovels, who is working on non-Gundam Tomino novels right now (I think Garzey's Wing is among their projects?)

There exist a few Code Geass novels translated, about 5 or 6 to my knowledge, each found in the usual places. Given you seem rather proficient at this, perhaps you might entertain the thought in converting that relic into epubs for sake of posterity.
Thanks for this.
