He isn’t too dissimilar to many of the main characters in that regard. Yes, he did have more formal military education and got good combat experience through the war, but the likes of White Base team were in the thick of MS on MS combat (something nigh unheard of until mere months before war’s end) consistently though the later stages of the war. And that’s probably what allowed Amuro to close the gap in skill: while Char had more combat experience in general, Amuro at this point had just as much if not noticibly more experience fighting other Mobile Suits specifically.
