Upon further consideration that doesn't really mean much does it: could've just been G read as God.
G Gundam just sounds better for the name I guess. It's probably also considering that maybe they hadn't decided on the God yet - it is called the G Gundam the first couple of times in the show. Probably fits better for the OP lyrics as well.

The Americans were probably the real ones in control, but Wing was dubbed in Canada if it's worth mentioning.
On that note, what did they have Heero say in the censored version in episode one instead of "I'll kill you"? The only way to see it is from the censored VHS tapes or old TV recordings.

The short answer is that this show was originally going to be dubbed and edited to possibly be more kid-friendly in the USA, but those plans were dropped after Gundam Wing was popular on Toonami and the merch was selling well in burgerland stores despite the "Satanic Panic" of the 1980s & 1990s.

iirc some Gundam cast pop up in other Leaf-filmed joints, like tv dub Gihren is in a couple of Xfiles
