Clearly the Ball is an anchor point of the original UC timeline, so it not existing is directly responsible for Zeon's victory. The Ball Effect if you will.

It was never developed because with the loss of the RX program the GM it was supposed to provide cover and fire support for was never made. Instead everything was based around the Guncannon which integrated raged fire support into its design

I'm more of the mind that while the Light Guncannon seems to be a less fragile suit than the GM, it's not worse, just different. GM and Light Guncannon are like Zaku and Dom. One is the general purpose all-rounder, the other is a heavier suit with heavier weapons.

The Dom is actually armored about the same as the Zaku, it's larger size more for fuel storage and to store all the nuclear engines.

That's why I didn't say it was heavily armored, but it's a "heavier" MS since it's intended to be physically larger for more internal volume and better reactor, and carry bigger weapons (360mm bazooka by default)
