We've had Newtype-likes in Gundam AUs, and we've had UC spinoffs like Unicorn and Hathaway that have done Newtypes
Unless the few UC related spinoffs I haven't watched are an exception, we haven't gotten anything UC related that has done Newtype characters that aren't in any way related to Tomino characters have we?
I think the only thing I haven't watched is Thunderbolt.

It makes me concerned that nobody actually knows how to write original Newtype characters like Tomino can. Not without tying them so closely to the original shows and their characters (see Unicorn and GQuuuuuuX).

To say "I'm concerned" is maybe taking it too seriously, but Tomino is an incredible and unique writer. It's not just that no one quite writes psychics/espers like he does, but he has a sense for communicating psychic flow through his animation.
It's the whole package: his ability to write interesting psychics and communicate to the viewer what psychic phenomenon feels like through motion.

Narrative has ties to Unicorn, but Narrative's cast itself really had little connection to Tomino's.

Gundam X had "Newtypes" in spite of being an AU with an all new cast, rather than dodging the name/concept.

Although judging by Gquuuuux, if X were made nowadays they'd just straight make it alt.UC rather than having to rename/redesign the characters.

Neither of you get it, Jamil and Lancerow are basically Amuro and Char if they swapped roles once Zeon won the OYW. Jamil is an Amuro forced to flee and become a Quattro, and Lancerow is a Char who got as far in his military career as Londo Bell Amuro.
