People in /m/ call designs like pic rel "generic" or "boring", which I don't exactly get. To me, It's the same stuff as Zakus or Armored Cores, but you donโ€™t see the /m/en here treating them the same.
I just think I'm missing something here, you know. Just what separates the mecha design with appeal from the ones without?

OP are genuinely autistic? Not haha funny 4chan autistic, I mean being a card carrying autist. I think you're trying to ask people why they like or dislike certain robot designs, which is entirely a matter of opinion. For the OP image I actually like it, I can see how it folds up into a box and the more skeletal design is cool. Dunno why the head is shaped that way though.

OP to engage with your actual question it's a matter of taste. People used to criticize (and still criticize) many mecha for just looking like stereotypical Gundams. Some people like old designs, some newer. Some people like more grounded robots and others like the big burly all out designs. Compare the mecha from Blue Gender, Dunbine, Evangelion, and Armored Core and you'll see that there's a ton of variety in designs that results from the creator's goals and personal taste. As a personal example, I love monoeye units more than Gundam eye units because I think they can allow for unique emotions. That doesn't mean the RX-178 Gundam MkII isn't a wonderful design!
A design is usually generic if it's just some grey old tincan robot that was made to be a generic robot bad guy. Even then, the Zaku itself started as a generic bad guy. In truth, it is the EFFORT put into a design that often results in its beauty.

The truth is, there will always be someone who just doesn't like what you do at all. That isn't a mark against them or you, it's just life. Likewise, there are people who will like your work.
Focus on making and enjoying robots you enjoy, and share them without fear of judgement. That is the calling of a true /m/an.

its just a robot there is no design effort put into it unlike AC or MSes
there is no inspiration from fashion, mechanical design, car design, product design, or anything Its just a robot.
>It's the same stuff as Zakus or Armored Cores,
that just means you are not a /m/an

It's just parts. I classify these kind of designs as kitbashslop. It's the kind of slop you see on the 3D concept art section of artstation. It's just a humanoid assembly made out of random shapes and mechanical parts. They aren't cohesive designs, they only exist to demonstrate the moving pieces so the artist can show off how good their rigging and animations are. That CAN be cool, but that was never the appeal of "mecha." The Zaku and Gundam basically shapeshift and stretch and bend in the animation, just like humans. Mazinger and Getter do too. Transformers do the same. Optimus in G1? Not full of moving parts, just some shapeshifting when he transforms. Mecha were basically superheroes and that's why they got popular, especially in asia which didn't have capeshit.

It is true that fans do like to see the mechanical parts underneath designs like the Gundams and Zakus, but it's like a woman in lingerie or cute clothes. You want to take her clothes off, you don't want her showing everything off from the start.

/m/ is not a hivemind. I don't particularly like the robot in your image but don't think it's irredeemable or offensive to my tastes. By contrast I feel the robot in the OP is OK, even if I think I've seen executions of the idea I like more.
