People really need to learn that "meka" is just the portmanteau that the Japanese use for anything in fiction that is mechanised or a machine and that the genre of science fiction anime that focuses on is more commonly referred to as just "robo".

Because Japan was dirt-poor back then. Tezuka had to put his own money to finance the first Tetsuwan Atom anime when the sponsor came short, and make animation as limited as possible (in the process creating the "anime style" that's used to this day).

I remember reading Tezuka talking about his efforts to make money so he could start making animation and another comic artist getting angry at him while drunk. Tezuka was an incredible if odd figure.
