is it this simple?

The issue is that good tanks cost way too much considering how cheap the shit that can be used to blow them up is.

And the issue before that was they were absolute overkill in nearly every deployment because the grand majority of military conflicts since WW2 was insurgents vs government.
And the issue before that was shit maneuverability and breaking down/getting stuck constantly.

The issue right now is what the fuck tanks have to do with countering mecha? In any setting where mecha are viable it's because of some magic sci-fi bullshit and technological advances are the only plot device that outdoes them.

Its a less flashy than a missile delivery system but it would be cool, Ace Combat's arsenal bird had the right idea

everything is like that, what vehicle is there that costs less to build than the ammunition needed to destroy it?

Both the Xi and Penelope Gundams have funnel missiles, which are essentially just that. Like you said, its not very flashy but it still fits your description of spamming kamikaze "drones"

Lfrith preproduction model also had racks of things called "chelonians". Weird name aside, they worked just like explosive drones. Differently shaped more like mines, they also seemed to be more focused on maneuverability than speed like a rocket/missile weapon.

Also different from missiles in that they were able to swarm enemies from several angles and evade incoming fire, to a degree.

Yep. I'm probably just getting old, but I had to rewatch some scenes to see exactly what was happening in detail, there was just so much SFX going on in most of the battle scenes.

I recently learned that Lfrith Thorn and Ur were basically designed with the idea that they were direct successors to the few surviving Pre-Production models saved by the SAL (like Calibarn). It's a shame designers decided to go with Gundvolvas being their gimmick, instead of them having more drones like this. It would have made hints of Sophie and Norea's affiliation to the underground Ochs Earth a bit more clear in the show. Then again, episode 20 wouldn't have been as brutal with only the missiles.

Drones are literally just funnels that are remote controlled instead of brainwave controlled.

Im sure in the future a CAS pilot can deploy and control drones while straffing the area and recall them.
Programmable munitions arent far off either.

The real counter will be quantum radar and quantum over-the-horizon radar that will make defenses able to fly swat even a kite from miles away. And ofc EWS systems on all IFVs and armored vehicles
Laser guided guided(not sighted, big difference) arms like grenade launchers, high cal rounds will also be a big counter.

They really need to find something to put new life into funnels and the like. Theyre so boring and unimpressive these days.
