He did do everything right, in the sense of planning it right and it actually working out.
But he was still a total dick about it; and arguably more of a ruthless manipulator than McGillis.

I'm convinced IBO was conceptualized as a remake of the Berserk Golden Age Arc. Mikazuki represents Guts, Griffith is split into McGillis and Orga. But the writers seemed so interesting in hyping up the coming T R A G E D Y, they completely forgot what to do with the characters or plot in between then. What elements the show does take interest in dont land. The show wants us to be fascinated by Mikazuki and Orga's symbiotic relationship, but Mikazuki is such a shallow sperg I don't care. Every character inside Tekkadan comes across as shallow, and in need of fleshing out.

McGillis is a poor man's Griffith who lacks the charm or sense of righteousness Griffith had. He's not a terrible character or anything but he's too blatantly Macchiavellian to be that interesting or charming, yet he somehow is the most developed and interesting character in all of IBO.
