Nowadays it's extremely difficult for series like it to catch on.
It's an anime-original so it doesn't get free hype by people who know the source material.
As a director Taniguchi has a style that has always been more niche and nowadays his direction is almost alien to how modern anime is constructed.
The character design and mecha probably give a lot of more normal audience a feel that they're antiquated, like they still are carrying that 2000s vibe. The prominent characters being heavily male is unsuited to the current waifu-driven industry. Nowadays a character with Zetsu's role would be expected to be either a waifu or an ikemen, and he starts doing crazy shit too deep into the series for the people who drop an anime if the first 3 episodes don't give them enough "hype moments."
The name of the anime is bad for online search algorithms.
I don't think Nakashima is really known as a writer among normalfags, a lot of people don't really pay attention to the creative staff and instead look at the studio making things.

That's a shame, I feel that because modern audiences go into shows expecting hype without buildup is why I feel so detached from modern Shounen Manga/Anime

It came out in Winter 2021 and got buried shit like AoT and a bunch of isekai shows. Just unfortunate timing.

It's a shame it didn't catch on, but at least it won't be remembered as a dumpster fire.
