They weren't being trained. They were taught how to use a mech, and then they were thrown on the front lines with barely any supplies. They were just replaceable grunts who weren't expected to survive long.
It's also a plot point later on that the military is reducing the training time for cadets (as in the actual trained soldiers, not the civilian fighters) from 3 years to 1.

The plan from the start seems to have been to turn Leo (and others) into PR superstar mech pilots. There are a lot of nods towards dystopia fiction such as 1984, so I suspect that the "twist" will be along the lines of Omelas, a utopia built on the suffering of a forsaken child.

It's decent so far, but currently still feels like a shonen like MHA with mechs, the only parts super interesting right now being the main character and his grudge. Here's hoping when we can reach an interesting development for other parts of the story.

Mech designs are pretty cool but also aren't shown off enough yet outside of the generic Zulab. More action and specific character mechs being used more often will help with that.

I've read 11 chapters so far. I don't hate the MC but I think he's boring compared to his dad. I can't get past the fact that the one entertaining thing about him (his tendency to abruptly switch between serious and cheerful) is also what makes him seem like an intentional combination of the two most generic action anime protagonist archetypes (the uber-talented "cool" guy and the excitable stock shounen protagonist). Maybe he'll become more interesting later. I'm going to keep reading because I like the mechs.

Does this manga read as Mecha Hero Academia just because they keep saying the word "hero"? It's been years since I read any of MHA, but from what I remember, the tone is pretty different.

Kinda. MHA is about the growth of a legitimate hero, whereas HO is the conspiracy and espionage in infiltrating and taking down the organization.

The issue comes in that both went the route of a school to hold their settings, and whilst MHA can get away with it as a legitimate school setting, HO feels a little out of place because it's a darker story but it's treating it very light-hearted shonen right now. But also HO hasn't had enough time to cement it's position yet, because it's only 31 chapters as of typing.

It's also very blatant propaganda about the word 'Hero', whereas MHA used it more as a job title with a hopeful message underlying it.
