Doesn't 2 barely function on modern computers? There's a repack for both and most of it sounds like only the 1st one still works good.

Depends. There's some repacks for windows foating around. Might be easy to run. I could not get it to run under Wine though and the Linux port is another alien in its entirety if your a Steam Deck or general Linux gamer. Best I've gotten is with a SDL1 to SDL2 wrapper. Really wish someone had their hands on the source code for this game.

Well good news is that you can rebind to WASD. Bad news is that it will still control like MechWarrior, so its turret/torso controls over standard strafing and mouselook. It can be awkward at first but you get used to it.

Yucky. Mechwarrior at least has torso twisting as its inspiration, I really dislike it when faster mechs get slowed down or abstracted in their controls just cause it's how people did it at the time.

Well it is a 1999 game. If a Heavy Gear 3 got made it most likely would just have standard FPS controls. But MechWarrior style controls were the standard for PC mech sims like how tank controls were the standard for any 3D psx game. If you can play Armored Core 1 then Heavy Gear 2 doesn't ask for much more than that.

these games are supposed to be vehicle simulators, not plain first person shooters. if the controls aren't a little unusual, it doesn't feel like a simulator. flight simulators would be a lot easier if you played them with a keyboard and mouse, and everything too complicated for a standard control scheme was automated to the point that you don't have to worry about it, but they would also be very pointless. sticks and throttles also make these games more fun.

What's the point of making a big metal human if it has to do three point turns? I want my mech simulators to simulate piloting a mech, not a tank.

Heavy Gear 2 is actually the more mobile of the mech sim games. You can strafe, crouch, do zero-g combat, melee, and all with pinpoint accurate aiming. MechWarrior never really had any of this. but yeah it's not on the level of Armored Core.

True, like 90% of the gameplay problems and corner peaking, especially in pvp, would be improved if the game had lockboxes or a loose aiming reticle.

ECM at least in Heavy Gear Blitz is the one thing that can save a Gears ass from being obliterated by tanks, helis, and artillary. HG2 kinda underrepresents how important it is as you mostly fight Hovertanks and Frames. Haywiring a Gear is also another ability but to be fair that might be a simplification on Blitz end as I don't know how it worked in the old RPGs.

Modern games are designed with the option to have a controller, so a lot of functions are moved to submenus and "smart" buttons with many functions. You wouldn't have a command to change the hud color nowadays.

And part swapping but in my opinion it doesn't work as well. Even though it might be annoying at first to only have one Gear in the HG2 campaign I do think it helps force a player to play to a Gears strength. Something that a lot of MechWarrior and clone games fell victim to is that you'd never touch lighter chassis after gettting any big boi. I never touched a Firefly in MW3, and the Bushwacker was immediately obsolete once you get a heavy mech. But if you're stuck in a Dark Cheetah in HG2 then you'll play it as the stealth, fast, target designating Gear that its ment to be. HG1 falls more victim that the other MechWarrior games do, though I will say that the final missions do like Jaguars still over say the Mammoth. Another thing is that the part swapping I don't think was as thought out as any Armored Core, the definitive build-your-own-mech experience. Having Grizzly arms on a Hunters torso just looks goofy and was never as satisfying as making an AC.

I've only got into Heavy Gear recently with blitz and 4e. How much has the setting changes since this game and what gears were created after it?

Agreed, though HG2 locking you to a single gear and giving you all of its weapons and systems available immeidately was probably not the right solution
>>23385474
The setting has progressed about 10 years with the current timeframe being the tail end of the CEF’s second invasion attempt

There are a handful of new gears for north and south, a bunch for Paxton and NuCoal, and literally everything for the colonies that doesn’t already appear in HG2.

Not too much as far as I can tell. There are some retcons here and there but I think 4e and 3.1 Blitz era are trying to bring it back to be more in line with 2e era Heavy Gear over the Blitz 1.0 days. I know some anon whos an insider on the /tg/ mecha monday threads was talking about how insane New Jerusalem was looking to shape up with brains in jars before it got rewritten to be more in line with the rest of the universe. That's cutting room floor stuff though. I never dug too deep into the Blitz 1.0 era lore but I guess some weird shit was also going on with NuCoal having mind control pyramids or something. The biggest shake up might be going from the interpolar war to the second CEF invasion which might be odd as my brother was telling me that the lore was looking more like Atlantis was going to be the target of a CEF invasion over Terra Nova again. Oh and... Eden had some new developments with their Golems but Eden has always been kind of poorly thought out.
>and what gears were created after it?
Actually every Gear you see in HG2 you can play in Blitz and 4e. The old Paxton prototype gears used to be axed, since they got recycled into the claw series Black Talon gears but now they're back as a kitbash option for the minis. Everything else is still playable. What's not might be some of the weapon terminology. What used to be the VHAC is now a HRC.

And yeah a lot of current work is going into unretconning the old retcons while preserving the parts of the new stuff people actually liked

Curious about the the Atlantian front looks like. Mainly in what units CEF and the gang are fielding.
>And yeah a lot of current work is going into unretconning the old retcons while preserving the parts of the new stuff people actually liked
I wonder what these are. I guess the easy stuff like axing most of the NuCoal lore post 2e but keeping the Gears.
