Char having a more major role in Zeta probably helped cause that. Amuro was an important character in Zeta as well, but Char was more of a frequent mentor to Kamille. Later series' Zeon wank probably gave Char more of a spotlight by proximity.

While technically char is a newtype his abilities are much less than amuros to the point he basically isn’t even a newtype and most people don’t even know that he is one. Too many of amuros feats are reliant on Gary stu plot armor that not only did he climb into the strongest mobile suit at that time in existence with 0 training- but that he unlocked super magical deviant art OC abilities that give him a stronger potential than any other characters just because.


For the first few episodes amuro feels like he is an underdog but the point is he is protected by so much plot bullshit that the longer the franchise goes on it feels more like the underdog is char. Chat has much more training and much more experience and for that reason feels more like the everymans character that is surviving due to his training. Char is even characterized that way in different media saying if you don’t train enough youre just going to die in the war. Char for that reason just feels more like a respectable axe pilot. Not a goku type character.


Amuro is also a whiner and a brat a lot of the time. Char simply has better charisma and looks a lot cooler.

Char feels like he always got pushed more than amuro. Like if someone got a gundam collab, char and his imagery would be front and center. It just always makes me think of how vader and maul were always on the box. Villains make for strong marketing.

Another thing that's not mentioned that often is how by the end of the story he becomes the underdog.
In the first half he pilots dinky shit that doesn't even have the ability to damage the gundam and by the time his suits catch up, Amuro awakens his space wizard powers and becomes an unstoppable killing machine.
IIRC after Lalah dies he explicitly expresses his doubts "how the fuck am I even supposed to fight that?" which makes audience sympathize with him.

Char starts out as just a 2cool4school boss character and he gets progressively more humanized as the show progresses.

I may be wrong but my impression of the original cartoon series is that it takes place over a relatively short amount of time. he shouldn’t be power leveling so fast. I’m mainly talking about the original cartoon because everything else is just an expansion which builds on top of that.

I might be wrong but I don’t remember the show giving me the impression (in the original series) that his newtype abilities were giving him a sixth sense constantly to just know what to do. the later series I don’t really care much about because things get exponentially fuckier after the end of the first series.


Personally I have always felt gundam would have been more interesting without the newtype stuff but that’s my opinion and I know people have wildly varying opinions on that talking point.

Char never struck me as the type of guy that if he was in amuro position and stumbled into the gundam without training that he would have done well.

I don’t like dragonball z specifically because of the idea of certain characters having a predefined potential and some characters just inherently being born with 20 times the skill ceiling as other characters it just seems like lazy writing.

Amuro didn't have a Newtype awakening until right around when Lalah was introduced. Before that, everything was the result of his own natural training and skill, which he diligently honed. The Gundam being especially resilient just helped Amuro outright stay alive in his first few fights, but he quickly had to improve and learn. No one ever disputed that Zeong is better than Gundam. But they have two explicit lines - from Kycillia and Char himself - explaining that he doesn't have a grasp on it yet since it's the first time he sits on it, he's not sure if he will be even capable of even using the remote weapons before launching.
If you actually pay attention to the fight, Char is kinda floundering and doesnt make great use of psycommu, he only managed to disable Gundam because Amuro fucks up and shoots the chest, where the cockpit usually is, instead of head.

Sayla gets in on a whim under gravity, in a desert, and goes out to fight guys who were specifically sent to fight the Gundam and at least knew a little bit about MS combat. Amuro had the advantage of fighting guys who had never even seen another MS other than the Zaku. And when he fought Char, he got kicked around the entire time. If Sayla had started out under the same conditions as Amuro, she'd probably do about as well until their newtype powers started coming into play.

What people don’t seem to point out is that Char’s actually a descendant of a long lineage of beautiful evil blonde boys in mecha anime. The popularity of characters like Garuda and Richter from Nagahama’s Robot Romance and Tomino’s Prince Sharkin helped pave the way for Char to blow up as a character.

His cool design, confident personality and easily identifiable aesthetic of piloting red Mobile Suits made him appealing to otaku who admired his tenacity. While his handsome appearance and dynamic with characters like Garma and Amuro allowed fujoshi to run wild. Amuro was just too much of a grounded character and therefore lacked the kind of marketability compared to Char.

I think people forget that after the first episode Amuro essentially has the most experience in actual mobile suit on mobile suit battle. Zeon soldiers didn't have to fight against other MS prior the launch of the Whitebase. Amuro literally has more experience than anyone he faces.
