I'm wondering, did anyone here read Tripods as a teen? For me, it was the spark that eventually lead me to love anything /m/.

Wow you unlocked a core memory for me as a kid. Yes I read these books as a kid. I also did a book report on it, and made a diorama. I wish I took a picture. Unfortunately those items are long gone. But it was good times.

I was just a kid. Either 5th or 6th grade? I think my assignment was to make a diorama of a scene from the book.

I used a large shoe box, and covered it entirely in thick white paper to hide all the logos and give it a clean look. I can't remember the exact details of what scene I choose. But it involved a Tripod walking across the landscape.

I used part of a 7-11 slurpee cup to build the Tripod. The round slurpee plastic lid I used for the Tripod head. And I used a mixture of cardboard to build the body, and used bendable straws for the arms/legs. Then I colored/painted it the Tripod grey.

I'm sorry I can't remember what else the scene had specifically. It was so many years ago. Just that it was a landscape scene, with grass and mountains, and the human characters were trying to hide from the Tripod.

I colored the interior of the diorama to make it look like a sky and landscape. Added some pop-up pieces of paper that looked like rocks and some folded pieces of paper that looked like humans. I think...?

Then I covered the diorama front in clear plastic wrap (the kind you use for cooking in the kitchen). And used an index card to write a summary of the scene in the diorama. And taped it to the top of diorama.

I was given an A or A- for my grade. I was quite proud of my work. It took me hours. I kept the diorama in my room for a long time. Maybe a year or so. But when my family moved homes, a lot of my older projects were thrown away. Looking back I wish I took a photo. But it was the early 2000s it didn't occur to me. We also only had film cameras back then and used them only for special occasions.

Anyway that's my blog post. Thanks for unlocking a core childhood memory. You are probably the last person on the entire PLANET who even cares. I doubt my old classmates even remember. It was 20 years ago and they have moved on with their lives.

I guess I'm a bit of a sentimentalist.

Thanks for telling me about it, anon. As a sentamentalist myself, it's always fun to hear stories like that. I used to build Tripods from Legos myself, although memories of how exactly they looked have also been lost to time as well.

It really bothers me that all the cool gadgets and technology happened in the 90s and 2000s before we all carried cameras. Now that we have cameras, all the cool stuff is long gone. Why?

It's a shame this board doesn't discuss Western mecha franchises and literature.

Funny you should say that. I was going to to make a thread about sci-fi books that inspired mecha anime and ask for recs. So far I have in mind:
>Starship Troopers and Childhood's End (original Gundam)
>Mote in God's Eye (Coordinators in SEED)
>Foundation (Foundation in Freedom)
>Hunt for Red October (Ramius's namesake)
>Rediscovery of Man (Instrumentality in Evangelion)
>2001 (VOTOMS ending)
Any others?

The problem with Western mecha is that there's a lot of books, but not a lot of animations or live action.

It's both a blessing and a curse. It's a blessing because it keeps the Normies away. Look at what happened to comic book movies and anime. Infested with Normies and bottom feeders.

It's a curse because it stops the growth of the genre.
