IS GUNDAM WING PALE FIRE OF ANIME
Relena is literally insane, she suffers from pretty severe dementia, so no, she's not actually the most popular girl in school, and she doesn't become the queen of the world. More importantly, the entire series is her view of the world (the first scene is from her view, the last scene is from her view). The story's schizophrenia makes sense when you approach it correctly, and realize that it is literally schizophrenic. The only fact we're given about her is that she is Zechs' lil' sister and she pursues a relationship with Heero, past that it's up to the viewer to figure out what's real and what's not in the series. It's questionable if there are even Gundams or any of the politics in the reality of the series, for all we know, everything is mostly Relena's dementia, and she lives in a world entirely like our own, but of course, this is up to the viewer to decide, as Gundam Wing is the Pale Fire of the anime world. It's very intelligently written and expects its viewers to be just as intelligent as it is.
Below this is my analysis of Gundam Wing, if you want to discover things for yourself, don't read past here.
Everyone else is pretty much as they are normally except for Heero and Zechs, who you now realize actually have reasoning to dislike each other: Heero is pretty unstable himself, at least early on. He's a suicidal, hormonal 15 year old boy who tells people to just live by their emotions instead of thinking things through. Zechs is out to protect his mentally unfit little sister, and Heero's romance with her is perhaps the most dangerous thing for her. Heero does eventually grow up and get over his issues, and the main issue between the two is now Zechs being (over)protective of his little sister, and Heero trying to prove to Zechs that Relena should be allowed to have love, and he's capable of taking care of her.
You can tell Relena's feelings about Zechs by his role in the story. he starts out as a faceless villain, then when she learns her true identity and his (maybe they are long lost siblings, or maybe he's just moved back home to take care of Relena after their parents break up (more on this later)), he loses his mask and becomes a hero.
when Heero gets over his issues and becomes serious about her, even knowing her issues, Zechs now becomes the villain again. even the mechs follow this progression: Heero originally pilots the rather generic, but clearly heroic wing. as Heero changes, he loses wing and goes through a bit of an identity crisis (piloting Heavyarms for a moment, trying to emulate his more mature and together friend Trowa, and then piloting the Mercurius off in space, as he's decided to shut out Relena in an attempt to protect her). when he finally decides to follow his emotions and pursue their relationship. When he pilots Wing Zero for a moment and goes berserk, it indicates that he went too far too fast with Relena sexually. After this, he goes back to piloting the safe Wing from when they first met, showing that he's trying to be chaste and take things slow, but as things progress, Wing becomes more damaged and less effective on the battlefield. This continues as their relationship grows up and becomes sexual, until he is given the Epyon, things are now clearly in the sexual realm, perhaps even indicating that they've fully consummated their relationship. Sexuality is a scary thing for any young girl, in Relena's mind, it's given a demonic, dragonic, and even phallic (GIANT sword, and hell, just look at the legs on the thing in it's dragon form). He continues to pilot the Epyon, sometimes being reckless (perhaps experimenting a bit in bed, or initiating sex when she might not be exactly in the mood), until eventually things stabilize, they both grow up and become comfortable with each other and their sexuality.
However, Zechs has recognized their relationship and doesn't feel it should be allowed to go on. This is indicated by their fight with each other (perhaps in the "real" world this was a shouting match, or maybe it even came to blows?), and Zechs loses Wing Zero, which in Relena's mind indicated the adult, which, while capable of terrifying power (sexuality), is self-realized and mature, capable of controlling themselves emotionally and sexually. Heero, not only past his own issues, but also having a healthy, caring relationship with someone suffering from the severe dementia of Relena, is now given Wing Zero, while Zechs, now the villain in Relena's mind, seemingly incapable of controlling his temper, takes Epyon.
From this point on in the story, Heero is the one doling out advice to the other pilots, who he used to turn to advice for, and each of them have had their stories shown from Relena's point of view, what's real in them might not be real, but it's Relena accepting that everyone has their problems (Trowa and his sister, his amnesia may be him trying to forget his life at home, perhaps he's a runaway?
Quatre, despite seeming to be calm and mature was shown to be capable of great violence with W0, perhaps he went too far with someone, maybe even raping them? Wufei yells at hyenas for being too weak, an analogue to him being a misogynist who insults and preaches to women as they laugh at him. Duo, while being a fun guy even in the end, is careless and irresponsible).
The other adults in the story go through various stages as well, Noin originally dependent on Zechs, comes over to Relena's side, even opposing (a break up?) Zechs. Lady Une killing Darlian, in reality is her sleeping with him, breaking his marriage apart, and results in him being "dead", being kicked out of their home. Eventually Relena realizes that Lady Une is just as human as anyone else, and forgives her, making Une become less of a villain, and even a hero in the end (although she still has her "die", clearly showing she still feels resentment towards the woman who broke up their family). Treize is awesome. Darlian himself is originally a very important person in the world, but after his affair, he's "dead" to Relena, and she even invents a new family who were perfect royalty of a perfect pacifistic kingdom to replace him. It's unclear what happens to her mother, but seeing as we never see much of her, it's likely terrible enough that Relena chooses to completely ignore her, in order to protect herself (most likely she committed suicide).
Mobile dolls and the various factions that create and use them are increasingly powerful medication used on Relena, which she feels makes her inhuman and she rejects them. The Gundam scientists are a new set of doctors she sees, who prescribe her with different medication (The Gundams), which works better for her.
This isn't a complete analysis as there's just too much going on in the show for me to summarize right now, but with the tools I've given you, the reader, I'm sure you're now capable of discovering them yourselves.
