The timeline is helped when you realize 90% of this stuff was made up after lol, no big surprise there's no space in the original to fit most of it. Though we sure made a lot of weird fucking tanks in WW2. If there's reasoning to be made, refitting stuff like zaku 1 and later 2 into more specialized mechs is a direct parallel to what we did in real life.

Tomino should write a plot and hand it off to the Requiem for Vengeance guys to finish. That felt like more of a war story than any other Gundam except maybe 08th MS Team. Almost felt like watching a WW II film.

Well the intention seemed to be to put an definitive "ending" story on all of Gundam, so leaving out Wing would have been weird and driven rumors in the direction of "Why? Does he hate Wing? Does he not consider it to be Gundam? Is it too different? Why not G?" etc. That said, Tomino isn't personally responsible for every specific reference in Turn A or G-Reco, but apparently he also never watched even one episode of Wing until about 25 years after it came out so take that as you will.

Small drones are kind of shit. They can't carry very large payloads and they're being countered in the field with cope cages, which despite the name stick around because they're actually kind of effective. The next generation of vehicles in war will just be more designed so you don't have to ever stick your head out, which is 90% of what they target.
Ironically this is much more in the way of how mechs typically operate, with lots of cameras and manipulators so they can do a wider variety of tasks while remaining protected. Tanks in the future might have limbs so you don't need to get out so often.
