What are they usual refined from its predecessor? The cost, the performance?

In a lot of cases it seems like they're trimming the fat or making it share more common parts.

There's no real consistency. Also, IIRC the Refined Barzam name was added in a later magazine volume. In the prologue/side-story manga for Sentinel it's just called a Barzam and the later profile indicates that it's basically a Barzam v2 or v1.5 rather than a refined version.

Refined suits are streamlined versions of previous high end models. And they are usually produced several years after the initial model is released. So while they are better than grunt units, they are no longer top end units anymore because they are released much later.

In the case of the federation, it's streamlining for the sake of mass-production. No idea about the regelgu.

In the case of the ReGZ and ReZEL yes, but Refined Barzam is supposedly an improvement.

For Zeon, the Regelgu and Rebawoo are big upgrade packages. The Regelgu was a stopgap upgrade for Axis to keep their Gelgoogs competitive until their next generation MS were ready to deploy, so you could sort of consider it to be equivalent to the Federation's GM II upgrade package for OYW era GMs. The Rebawoo was given improved weapons and had psycoframe added, because it was intended to be Full Frontal's personal custom MS until they came across the opportunity to steal the Sinanju.

Not specifically by that name, but there were some attempts to simplify it. The MP ZZ is basically a downgraded GM-style MS that doesn't transform but keeps some of the heavy firepower, and the Theta Plus is a different rework of the ZZ that cut costs in other ways but keeps the three-part transformation and the biggest beam cannon.

In terms of names, there's a version of the ZZ called the ZZ-GR but it was just Judau's ZZ rebuilt with spare GM legs and a bunch of propellant tanks for long distance travel during his time with the Jupitris convoy. I don't think they ever explained if GR stood for anything, but it definitely wasn't refined, more like a field expedient repair job.

the Shangri-la kids pretty much stole the Nahel Argama and the La Vie En Rose tagged along with them on their solo mission to take out Neo Zeon, I don't think AEUG had a say in anything, especially after the La Vie En Rose suffered a terminal case of blowing up. Frankly, I won't be surprised if Beecha and Mondo took the rest of the Gundams back to Shangri-la with them, and Bright probably looked away and shrugged. What's the AEUG and the Federation gonna do, go chase after the people who beat Neo Zeon?

yeah, they had Amuro right fucking there in either a Rick Dijeh or a Zeta Plus (sources conflict) along with a solid chunk of the federation fleet
it would have been totally in-character for them to kill the Shangri-La kids

What happened was that the Zeta and MK-II were abandoned on Axis following being totalled by the Quin Mantha. AEUG would later pick them up, fix them up and keep them in storage along with the Hyaku Shiki.
