Considering Morosawa killed every other possible girl and love interest for Kira, I believe it.

Especially that drama where Morosawa though Fukuda was cheating on her with Cagalli's voice actress. So she turned Cagalli from a warrior princess into a weak leader that does nothing but cries and gets married to Yuna Roma.

Every single girl in the show is paired off. Notice that? The only non-paired girl is the Dom pilot. But she is hinted at being a lesbian and worships Lacus.

What do they think in their final moments - do they feel intense regret and fear, wondering why they wasted their short lives on such a deadly and horrific death sport?

I looked up images of them. There they are - playful spirits, young, vibrant women, wearing street-clothes, living cute and beautiful lives. Smiling, giggling, hugging each other. Strong young women. Sisters. Inspirations. One day, they probably all went to the bathhouse together. And then...

Sudden. Instant. Shredded to atoms in mere moments. KILLED.

It's the sexiest fucking thing ever. I love seeing characters from other series (such as idol animes) being thrust into these situations. I love these kinds of death scenes, watching these girls who - just days ago - had normal lives. They woke up, they maybe thought about cute boys, they did their makeup, they...

Man, it's just so amazing. I need a fucking show on the level of Akame Ga Kill where main characters die every other episode and its all about sexy pilot girls in these situations.

The whole problem is that they were just blank slates outside of Juri, who got a little extra attention in Astray. They just existed to be M1 Astray test pilots and make the battle sequences slightly less monotonous. Zero characterization outside of the combat sequences, and relatively little even in the combat sequences. Not even wasted potential, because Fukuda didn't even attempt to make them into actual characters. He put more effort into the Druggies, for fuck's sake. The only reason people are "mad" is because their deaths were cheap and just tossed out there in quick succession for shock value.

At least when Tomino killed off the Shrike Team, he gave them a decent amount of screen time and dialogue first, to allow the audience to get attached to them. The M1 Astray girls were little more than eye candy, the way they were utilized.
