"i can take bits and pieces from kits" sounds like incompetency because it appears just as simple as putting legos together without much mental work. but that's really not as important as overall form, which kitbashing can help you get to very quickly without getting stuck on specific detailing. detailing are like the words of the mecha design language: writers working in the same language will take words from the same pool, but the more important part are the sentences and whole texts they make from those words rather than the fact that they're actually mostly using the same words.
people who can't figure out the design goals of a mecha in the first place will not be able to see the work put into shaping the overall mecha forms, missing the forest for the trees. the design will obviously look aimless and sloppy to them. they'll look at nihei's work or the work of aaron beck and accuse them of brick gun slop shit, instead of criticizing actually aimless designs.
