Astray manga was releasing at the same time as the show and offered more depth and context for the story and the world for fans who wanted it. Same with various datebooks and interviews etc. Of course it was all still second fiddle to the show itself.
It's just that this approach kinda falls flat outside of Japan where the supplementary content doesn't follow along with the show. Even if people know about it at all in the first place, they have no easy way to access it without investing extra to ship from Japan (assuming they know the language at all which is rare) or rely on third parties to translate it. So much shit just never really leaves Japan's borders, at the best of times we simply don't have the means to fully interact with the IP without jumping through a comical amount of hoops.
