I never noticed before this toy was announced that the original Gundam always had white joints while almost every other depiction in toys, Gunplas or 3D models have it black. How is that allowed? Why is Bandai so ashamed of the original design?

The animation doesn't have "exposed inner frame" for the original Gundam though. Any joints added to give it full motion are basically made up for the kits/figures. Although obviously painting them white gives them less attention than gray/black ones.

The original Gundam did not have an inner frame.
In fact none of the One Year War suits do, they use monocoque construction meaning the frame and outer armor are the same.

The old gunpla and figures from the 80s adhered to this, but after the introduction of the inner frame it was retconned into OYW lore, but it's not accurate.

The G40 Gundam was an attempt at interpreting this design aspect in a modern way.

Depends on who’s the animator, sometimes the Gundam has white clearly defined joints and other times it’s got a bit weird with the limbs just being squashy blocks that don’t seem to realistically connect to each other.

It's been so long since I saw 0079 I totally forgot the black joints were a toy thing and not animation accurate.

The federation never used monocoque, they used semi-monocoque. This goes all the way back to Gundam Century, which set the foundation for all databooks. Semi-monocoque IS an inner frame, it just relies on the armor for full structural integrity and the integration of some parts, like fuel tanks. The frame can still technically work by itself, hence the semi- part.
