Why is Mobile Suit Gundam 1979 considered a must watch for Gundam fans if it's a cheap promotional anime for toys like Bakugan or Beyblade? I agree that Gquuuuuux, Hathaway, Unicorn, Origin and Witch from mercury are great anime but I can't understand why oldies recommend watching physically outdated garbage from the late 70s.

I enjoyed it, though I can understand the criticism of it's pacing. The ending isn't super incredible and it takes a while for the action to heat up but at least there's some rad robot fights

Obvious bait

OP has probably never even watched 0079 like half the so called "Gundam fans" who only bring it up for the fucking Salt episode or some bullshit.

If you want bad animation go watch the original Yamato. 0079's animation is fine besides the few big problems that have been memed to death.

have you watched it? it isnt just a toy commercial, even early on you have amoros reluctancy to pilot the gundam turning into over ambition that causes problems, or his interaction with his mother or chars scheming or the white base being used as a decoy by the feds who dont care about them

You do realise that without 1979 Gundam, there wouldn't be other Gundam shows today? Without 1966 Ultraman and 1979 Gundam, there wouldn't even be Evangelion.

You need to honour your ancestors for your existence. I guess young people could never apppreciate all the hard work other people have done before they were born.

Some people complain that The 1979 Gundam story needs a remake, it has already been adapted multiple times in manga and video games. From 1990s to 2009, almost every video game console had a game dedicated to retell the story of Amuro's journey in the One Year War.

So if you don't want to watch the 1979 anime, you could get a taste of it from some previous generation video games.

>zeon jobs so hard it's insane
>seriously are the zabi family all inbred or something why do the make such dumb decisions
>zeon weapons are completely useless against the gundam's plot armor - impossible to build any real tension involving amuro because he is an invincible god of battle
>amuro is also not a very likeable character
>bell bottoms were not a good look on anyone what the fuck were people in the 1970s thinking??

the awful animation and 4:3 aspect ratio can be forgiven

Zeon is a fascist, totalitarian regime. Self-destructive decisions are par for the course (cough Imperial Japan).

Also, the Gundam isn't indestructible. It suffers damage in almost every fight, most minor. Ironically, the movie trilogy is even worse for Amuro being unbeatable because they cut out every time the Gundam almost loses (the bomb episode, the time Sayla got in the Gundam, the kid bomb episode, the first part of the duel on Texas with the Gyan).

By the end, Zeon suits just straight up outclassed the Gundam in all the ways that actually matter (mass-production, cost per power ratio). That was the whole point of the G-3 in the novel (and that the RX 78 was destroyed) and the Alex in expanded UC material.

Char's Gelgoog, and Gelgoog Commander types were superior per spec than Gundam.
Shit, some sources say the GM Sniper 2 has better performance to the Gundam.

And Zeong just straight smokes Gundam.

I'm not all the way through the series yet but
>every scene with a Zaku has them die just sort of because
>Zakus explode when taking minor damage
>Char repeatedly warns Garma how dangerous the Gundam is
>Garma plays games and is completely stupid anyway
>White base and Gundam take tons of hits but has no significant damage because Zeon weapons are useless
>Garma dies in a completely ineffective attack
>Char seemed to anticipate all of this stupidity and has recognized that his Zaku is completely incapable to scratching the paint on the Gundam
and this is why painting gunpla is superior to sanding and panel lining!

I dunno why people get all heated over the zaku not being able to damage the gundam. A new vehicle entering war and everyone discovering half their shit can't reliably penetrate it happened all the time. The zaku being an undergunned early war vehicle designed for fighting tanks and balls coming up against a more advanced mid-war vehicle of its own class and not being equipped to fight it is realistic.

It takes twelve episodes for the gouf to appear and literally whip amuro into fearing for his life. The entire rest of the series then goes forth with the fact that the gundam isn't invincible and he can absolutely be killed by the new generations of mechs and his invincible prototype status is outdated.

The better episodes are also usually not just built around if the protagonist machine will be blown up or not, because anyone aware that they're watching a season and not a 25 minute movie is already going to be pretty hard to sell on real, existential and immediate danger to the Gundam or Amuro.

a quarter of the way into the series I thought there would at least be something. So far the only real threat to Amuro has been his own teen angst, but somehow Frau Bow telling him that he isn't a real man fixed it? The show says how White Base and the civilians are constantly under threat and barely pulling through, but that isn't what it has shown. Maybe it's expecting too much from nearly 50 year old animation, but had White Base been shown to be damaged and barely limping back to safe airspace as stated, instead of in it's factory new state, it'd go a long way to sell the narrative.

ATA

The bomb episode is excellent, especially in the part at the end where the Zeon soldiers congratulate Amuro.

Let's see here, I have a few

Gundam Rises (Ep 1) is a classic and the last one.

Hand to Hand Combat (where Ral storms the White base) is very good.

All of the Miharu episodes are pretty solid (and they even use a plotline that is very similar to that in ZZ at one point).

The last ten (leaving six to the end of the war) are some of the best ten episodes

Clover was the initial funder. They made these shitty metal toys IIRC which did not sell well at all, so they pulled funding.

I really like all the Zeon scenes near the end of the series, where we see the Zabis bickering and plotting.

As a follow up to that post.

Clover had influence on how the show went, and the Gundam Guncannon and Guntank designs. They did not influence the Zeon designs which is why some of them are less "cartoony" than the Federation suits. Back then, bad guys were disposable to toy makers because most shows (super robot shows) had bad guys of the week, usually aliens or Kaiju or something.

I think Tomino wanted Amuro to die in the show (which actually happened in the novel). The book also had things like sex and more explicit violence, which were not present in the show. The cast were not kids unlike the show. Also, some pretty good illustrations (a reassuring trend in Tomino novels) like the one I attached.

Zeta Gundam is the sequel series and very much where the 'final form' of Gundam began to take shape. When people talk about things like the politics of the Universal Century beyond the WW2 allegory elements and rejection of Imperial Japan revisionism, it's usually the stuff that Zeta introduced or fleshed out.

The Gundam novels are just ways for Tomino to try new things and scratch that itch. We know what the original plans of Gundam if there was no early cancellation and Amuro ends up living.
