what do you think about warhammer's attempt at gundams? I like the concept but I think they botched the execution. for me the main problem is the scaling. I think that whoever designed them didn't understand the design conventions used by robot animes. with western /m/ it's not uncommon to have big robots and small robots in the same lineup, like at-st and at-at or light battlemechs and assault battlemechs, but in anime your humanoid mechas are almost always the same size. if designers want to make one look more powerful they just strap a bigger backpack on it or give it bigger guns. if you make the whole thing bigger it starts to look funny, like a giant kicking around a midget. I think that's why gundam usually makes mobile armors with less human shapes. with tau they actually got it right by giving the stormsurge no arms, but they fucked it up making the riptide so big.

40'ers would flip tables if they didn't have units to match the existing large scale units. The other 40'ers would flip tables about small units being able to beat bigger ones.

There's plenty of mecha anime with different scales of mech. Even gundam does it some of the time. I just think it's specifically battletech influence that humanoid mechs will be any size and non-humanoid mechs also any size, whereas stuff like armored core might have reverse joint armless drone mechs, humanoid standard mechs, freakier designs be oversized, etc.
I've seen people asking if japan does reverse joint leg mechs much and they do, but they're commonly a lighter class.

Anyway the tau stealth mechs are cool. Riptide feels a bit skinny for my taste, and the stormsurge just isn't very cool. A massive weird armless baby. All the custom parts that give it arms look way better.

Turned out no one really liked the combined army gimmick and everyone instead bought a shitload of crisis suits, so they pivoted.

Besides, very realistic military doctrine-like to change your mind when you realize it works good.

Everyone bought crisis suits, even the casuals and narrative gamers. People just liked them more. Kroot have frequently been an auto-include in comp lists because chaff is typically really good.

I don't know SHIT about Warhammer, but couldn't they have made their big unit a Macross homage? It's not like Macross isn't super mainstream enough for nerds not to 'get it.'

Small units already beat the big ones, the big ones are too expensive(even by GW standards) to actually be made viable so anything larger than a tank is pretty much dogshit.

There is a difference between an homage and lifting a design 1 to 1 and then going whoopie later after you get caught. That said, I don't think a macross homage really fits the tau to begin with.

they could have just made crisis suit (full armor) and crisis suit (sniper) and crisis suit (high mobility). making crisis suit (bigger) sucks because now the ones you already have look like manlets.

You've got to pay attention to when various things were added. Riptide was added in 6th edition when everyone was getting big centerpiece monstrous creatures models to fight each other with. The Riptide's size was determined more by the size of an Imperial Knight and other MCs being added in the edition. A Riptide is slightly smaller (and much leaner) than an Imperial Knight, but the Eldar Wraithknight is much taller than both.

>>23393143
That was kind of what they were doing with the Crisis, Broadside and Enforcer battlesuits, but as I said 6th edition was pushing centerpiece MCs and Tau got the Riptide (and Stormsurge in 7th) as a result.

Since this thread is about 40k mecha, can I just take the moment to say that it's fucking bullshit that they got Bamco of all people to do a warhammer model, and instead of something sick like a Warhound or a Knight, it's a fucking Primaris?
